OBSERVATION: Propane and Kero heater/cooking shortage

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Just an update on something I posted recently. Our HomeDepot is still out of KeroSun heaters, guy at store says they dont know if or when they will be getting any more. ALL kero wicks are gone as well as fuel additive and ignitors (whatever they are called) for the heaters. They have TONS of electric heaters but they arent moving at all. Two pallets of Bernz-o-matic 1lb propane cans disapeared, dont know if its just normal because they can be used for other reasons, but that was alot of propane moved in one week.

Went to the GIANT Sears store this morning in Hicksville, NY. ALL of the 1lb propane tanks were gone, there was 30 or so ten to twelve days ago. Almost all the flourescent camp lights are gone and most of the propane lights and stoves. I asked the guy at the counter if they will get more and he said he didnt think so for another week or so. I mentioned they were fully stocked a week or so ago and he said two people came on two different days and cleaned them out. One guy wanted to know if the 2-burner stove was safe for indoor cooking. Only takes a couple people to wipe out a stores supplies.

Sears is selling Kerosene heaters, some name cant remember starts with a C (corona?) they had them right by the escalator, never saw that before. 10k and 23k btu models.

the corona's were the first i looked for last year. they are good. i think they are made by toyostove. if you are looking for heater info--check out www.msiwix.com. very helpful. plus they may still have some heaters?

Toyostove (consumer-rated best brand) has a top-rated kerosene heater called the DC-100. From numerous phone calls to their distributors, I found that there were only ten of them available in the nation in September. I picked up an extra one back then, and was glad to get it. The local Costco still has some kerosene heaters in stock, but the quality looks pretty shoddy. Still, they are available.

Try BriteLyt

They carry an amazing german made multifuel lamp that has a stovetop accessory. Bought one for the home. In one word: AMAZING!

The main plant making the 1lb propane bottles blew-up some weeks back. Supply shortage.

I can vouch for the following folks at MSI Wicks and Heaters. I ordered one of their little heater/cookstove combos (already have a Toyostove/Kerosun from way back) and got it very promtply. Not realted in any way, just a happy customer......

Their site show they have Kero heaters in stock.

Hey Hammy!

Just went to Costco yesterday and they've got lots of the small propane canisters, 6 packs for $10. You'll probably see more when the next truck comes in.

Hmmm...well as I have been out and about the past week in North Chicago:

3 Ace Hardware stores that had a decent stock of (highly overpriced) 16.4 oz Propane canisters as of two weeks ago now seenm to be out.

Uncle Dan's Camping Supplies has run out of 44 Hour Candles (I managed to find an off brand one (looked like a sample) on the shelf (part of my Chrsitmas gifts to my girlfriend). The Army Navy Surplus place down the road from Dan's said they don't stock them "but people have been asking for them all week". Niether store was doing too well with keeping propane in stock despite HORRIBLE PRICES! $3.95 for a 16.4!!!

Hmmm...must be a lot of my fellow Chicago-dwellers doing some serious camping this winter...ahem.

Hamster. Went to Home Depot in Setauket today, the supply of Coleman Duracats is not moving nor was the 1lb and 20 lb propane.. And i counted ten Kerosene Heaters on the shelves and a palet in the back said on of the employee's. If your looking for these supplies they have them and plenty of them... I have been waiting for the supply to dwindle but my neck of the island must be sheep waiting for the slauter...:)

I have beeen stocking up SLOWLY as to not raise any eyebrows and the checkout....

Best wishes..

Blue,

I am thinking its one organisation or company doing big buying. When the KersoSuns disappeared they had previously languished for weeks, suddenly 20+ disappeared. Now the 1lb propanes at Sears sat for a month and suddenly all 30+ went away with 2 or 3 people.

Propane is definitely moving off the shelves in Canberra Australia. Especially the 20lb bottles, which are the largest generally available here. Not seeing much else noticeable though.

Here in Cairns Australia all the disposal stores and camping stores are sooooo quiet supermarket type stores have been selling a fair bit , probably most people here are still in clue deficancy mode.

In Cleveland Ohio, AMES has whole pallet of Kero heaters also has lil propane jugs for 2.97 per cannister, too high for me, but I have them already.
