Is it a fault with their mathematics? Or is it because they are bureacrats? I pity them anyway. Besides look at this: A document dated 30 Nov 99 (30 days to Y2K) describes the remediation status as on 15 Oct 99 (45 days old data). ------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.y2k.gov.in/other/yaf_statusrpt1.htm

Power sector has achieved 100% Y2K readiness including AC transmission and communication systems. They have also finalized the Contingency Plan.

STATUS OF Y2K EFFECT IN POWER SECTOR-ALL INDIA (As on 15.10.99) Installed Generating Capacity (Name plate) 93239 Effective installed Capacity 92904 Capacity not influenced by Y2K 61196* Capacity influenced by Y2K 31708 Capacity already rectified (As on 14th October, 1999) 31073 Capacity under rectification 635

I very much appreciate your reports. I have followed each news item on India and y2k very closely (my daughter is adopted from India; we are in e-mail contact with the foster family that raised her for almost 2 years; we have sent them Yourdon's book and other materials).

It has been my understanding that India faces grave problems. About 70% of power comes from government electrical utilities, the rest from private. I have heard that some of the private power has been fixed, but virtually none of the public sources.

Please tell us more. My wife and I are deeply concerned about India.

Good luck.

David,

Sure. I will keep posting more on the Indian scene.

But the state-owned utilities claim that most of their systems are analog and therefore they are immune to Y2K. They, however, don't say a word about distribution or SCADA. Suspicious! Anyway, we will know in another 2 weeks.
