My ISP is down

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

My ISP has been down for a couple of days now.
Can't log-on or when I get on can't get mail
or browse the internet. A lot of my clients are
calling to ask what's happening. When I contacted
the ISP they said that they installed new
equipment and are getting a new IP address.
The said they were waiting for a call back from
Verisign to resolve the problem. I asked if it was
a Y2K glitch and they replied "No, we've been Y2K
compliant for some time now."

But why are they doing this upgrade at the 11th hour?

Spider- I saw a thread a few days ago about Verisign secure ordering having a (coincidental?) expiration date from 5 years ago as Dec.31st. Maybe you can check the archives or synops can give you a link.

Your ISP's upgrade is probably coincidental. We upgrade when demand requires, expertise is available, and funds are available. That is true for the most part for all ISP's many, many, of whom do not have the inhouse expertise to rebuild what they already have.

If your ISP is Microsoft based, he should have already installed the latest set of patches for his servers and (according to MS) is compliant.

If he has been in the business for a more than three years his servers are getting older and at the same time his user base is expanding. The end result of these two forces is that he may feel his servers are overloaded and he can improve his service by installing new hardware.

The "can't" logon problem usually has to do with problems in his authentication server (radius). The logon but cant browse or get mail indicates a problem with his domain name server (DNS). Can't browse the net but can get mail = routing problems or router down.

wrong again squire, but you know that. I told you on another thread that one of your doomer pals is impersonating me. I did massive trolling here before, but like I said months ago, I would be more civil because of Mr. Decker.
