Computer Stops Launch of $1.3 Billion Satellite The Associated Press

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP) - Launch of a NASA satellite on a $1.3 billion mission to study Earth's environment was automatically halted moments before liftoff Thursday because of a software problem. An automatic software check during countdown indicated a problem on the Lockheed Martin Atlas IIAS rocket. The launch team found there was no problem, but there wasn't enough time left in the countdown to settle the discrepancy.

The launch was to be attempted again on Friday, NASA said.

The launch was supposed to be part of a NASA double feature on the East and West Coasts. But Thursday's launch of space shuttle Discovery from Cape Canaveral, Fla., had to be postponed because of equipment concerns.
