Sysops---Legal relief?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Dear sysops,

You certainly have your hands full. I applaud your hard work, and thank you for your tireless efforts. Just wanted to pass this along to you for what it's worth. I read the deleted post where "Infidel" stated that, since you were deleting his/her posts, in retaliation he would bring an army to disrupt this forum. I saw an identical threat once posted at the Utne on-line forum. The owner of that forum was able to take legal action, and successfully prosecute the disrupter on the basis of this same threat. I don't know what the legal cause/theory was, but if you contact the webmaster at Utne, I'm sure he'd be happy to supply the information. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a poster/lurker attorney on the forum who would take such a case pro bono.

Good point and I hope something can be done. We know what town she lives in, we know what she looks like (she has sent some men pictures of herself including her driver's license), so she will not be hard to locate. Sysops, keep deleting her, don't let her disrupt.

-- observer (observerrr@observerr.xcom), December 17, 1999.

Does her driver's license picture also show the information that gives her name, etc.?

-- Usuallyuse (realaddy@not.tonight), December 17, 1999.

actually...take the IP# and run a trace to her/his ISP and post a complaint. Don't you have the ability to block an IP# series?

-- Satanta (DeletingTakesTime@banThem.com), December 17, 1999.

I'm gonna take a wild guess that she looks like Glenn Close.

(Hoping I remembered who was who from that movie...)

-- Ron Schwarz (rs@clubvb.com.delete.this), December 17, 1999.

What if the driver's license is a fake, or belongs to an innocent person?

I don't think it's ladylogic thats the problem anymore. I am.

Some people think that free speech includes yelling "fire" in a theater, or trespassing on intellectual property, and represent that as being some kind of God given right? Get F#(
-- free speech (crandalls@cableone.net), December 17, 1999.

Exactly, Like I was saying. "Get real"

-- free speech (crandalls@cableone.net), December 17, 1999.

Crandall,

I came hear with the intention of serious Y2K debate. The behavior of this site is disgusting. Did you say intelectual property? Now thats rich.

I don't like disrupting this group, for the most part, there is some great discussion. I would like to get back to Y2K. But, this is unacceptable and it will not stand.

The most amazing part is you and others are not outraged. Simply amazing. I'm not swinging at windmills, I'm going to kick this one in the ass.

-- Infidel (Barbarians@thegate.net), December 17, 1999.

1) can't block IP addresses and it doesn't help that several people can come in on the same one.

2) Disruptions cause a lack of discussions. Interest in discussions should AUTOMATICALLY cause an avoidance of disruptions.

3) If you REALLY don't like to disrupt, then you can stop. Nobody is pushing you.

4) This has NEVER been a democracy, and it has NEVER been designed for balanced reporting. If this is a problem, consult with the postings of Flint, Hoffmeister et al, or go elsewhere, but please try to be adult about it, whatever you decide.

5) As anyone who has read either Hoffy, Flint or Ken Decker will readily understand (assuming that the reader is able to read, comprehend, and rub at least 3 synapses together) we actually do NOT delete disagreeing posts.

Barbarian

I hate to see guys like you losin' it. I admire your fire and I have actually enjoyed a lot of your input. But I just don't see why you would want to crap in your own nest.

I had a couple of lines to add to the thread you started the other day. "Special report"

I got a copy off. Its hangin' over my computer.

I didn't like when it got deleted, but its not my Web sight. I don't think I've got a right to complain about how they run it.

I just happened to pick up on you, because I needed some fun.

The problem is that we may get more excitement in the next few months than we really want and we may yearn for the days when things were nice and orderly. If you lose it then, you won't last long. I don't know about you, but I'm not gonna be so reckless that I can't grow old and I'm old enough that I have gotten tired of running into brick walls.

These people are just doing their job. Their not the enemy and neither am I.

Y2K aware people have their hands full trying to keep from looking like lose cannons and godzilla is out there looking to step on them. Do you remember that godzilla vs. bambi, HBO thing... Squash...The End.

How about taking a valium, getting some sleep and thinking it over. There are better fights if thats what your after. This ones not worth it.

Don't delete post that are not deserving of deletion.

I will meet you half way. Or as you choose.

-- Infidel (Barbarian@thegate.net), December 17, 1999.

Your right to free speech does NOT entitle you to use MY printing press, paper, ink, telephone, PA system, UHF communications equipment, computer, billboard, or ANYTHING ELSE, unless *I* decide to allow it.

By dictating terms of surrender to your victims, you essentially make their case for them, and seal your fate with the police/prosecutor/FBI (take your pick).

Quote: "Judge Judy"...(Yes, I keep T.V. on for company, and I am not proud of it!)

"Don't pee on my leg and tell me its raining!"

I wanted to send my mother (she lives in A.Z.) LL"s report of "her" meeting in Arizonia. It was so disjointed and ill reported that I felt Mom wouldn't listen .

I think responsibility matters.

I thought LL would be careful due to her own personal ignorance.

LL was thoughtful during that meeting with the questions because they were supplied to her.

The ansures reflected the inteligence put forth by other people than herself.

I am married and have childern and know what it means to live with balance

I have raised children with "BROKEN CODE",I know what the end of their worlds' mean!!(Foster Mom)

Bitterness does not help them grow.

Infidel,

You have NO RIGHT to "demand" that on a moderated board with guidelines posted that we put up with... trolls, spamming, disruptors and DOS "denial of service" attacks. Those who do participate in those actions are banned... and deleted on sight, no matter what "handle" they try to post under. (As they would be almost anywhere on the net).

GI?

Everyone posting here has the choice to behave according to "netiquette rules." When they CHOOSE to cross the line... NO WE DO NOT HAVE TO PUT UP WITH IT! ... in the name of free speech or censorship.

Get over your self-righteous blindness! (And your threats made last night to further disrupt the Forum). Pretty juvenile behavior, eh?

Or start your own forum and "run it" your way.

'Nuf said.

Diane

Come on, Infidel. Trolling will not acomplish the goal you state. All trolling accomplishes, is to get everyone to focus on the troll, insted of the other important issues. It is, so to speak, an intraveneous feeding, for the ego of the troll.

Pardon me, if I feel your credibility has been stretched a bit thin.

-- Bokonon (bok0non@my-Deja.com), December 17, 1999.

Sysops, Better get a grip

I'll have an army here by tomorrow. Smooth move. My ISP is Sprint. Come on!

-- Infidel (Barbarians@thegate.net), December 16, 1999.

Sometimes you just have to play on the enemies level. I hate to do it. But if you can't behave like opened minded people, well!

You have to play with the other children.

You brought it on yourselves.

What a joke, Squire! You don't even know that someone has been impersonating the "pollys" on this forum, just so you can boot them?

I told you months ago I would be more civil because of Mr. Decker; I guess one of your own little doomertrolls traced my IP from a post at stand77....that, or you gave out my number.

Several post made in the last few months were not even from me, but since the service I use is free, its not hard to impersonate me.

I am going to keep my e-mail address because its real.

-- Super Polly (FU_Q_Y2kfreaks@hotmail.com), December 17, 1999.

Applause to you once again, Diane. Wonder why the trolls are getting increasingly desperate? Is it because they are either A) paid shills under heightened supervisory pressure to accomplish disruption of truth sources such as this forum, or B) their own closeted insecurity about being nonpreparers is increasingly coming to the forefront as rollver approaches, and they realize that they can't meaningfully prep at this late date? If the latter, an SOL pollytroll is a loud, shrill troll.
