Chuck

-- Chuck, a night driver (rienzoo@en.com), December 15, 1999.

1. Are you leaning towards BITR (yes) or TEOTWAWKI (no)?

I am leaning towrard a lots of BITRs, some of which may seem like TEOTWAWKI to some peope.

2. Is your job technical in nature?

Yes.

3. Have you worked directly on Y2K remediation in past 12 months?

No.

4. Are you more so GI (yes) or DGI (no)?

Yes.

5. Do you know what PLC, DCS & SCADA mean?

PLC; yes. DCS; no. SCADA; yes. But I mean Yes in only the most amateur sense.

6. Can you solve 1st-order differential equations?

Once I could, but I need to take a refresher course.

7. Are you a vegetarian?

I have tried sometimes, but meat's just too tasty. Nevertheless I am sympathetic to what they're about and don't think they deserve all the ridicule they get.

8. Are you a Liberal (yes) or Conservative (no)?

Hard to say. I am more libertarian than anything else. I believe the job of government is none other than to secure our God-given freedom. All else is egotistical grandstanding and porkbarrel politicking. I object to the use of force by a government except only in the absolute last possible circumstance--defence of the country. Therefore I'm usually a "dove" not a hawk and am against capital punishment. I object to income taxes on the same principle since the mandate to collect them is backed by the threat of arrest--sales tax or tariff is far more just IMO. The "War on Drugs" is nothing more than a game of self-preservation by the Prison Industrial Complex (PID); the drug problem is a medical and economic problem one, not a criminal one. etc., etc...

9. Is God in charge of Y2K? (If you don't believe in God = no.)

I am a person of wavering faith, a mix of doubt and belief who has a hard time describing his spiritual bent. Nevertheless I do think that the End will ulimately become the Beginning. Since we are all strangely woven into this cosmic scheme, I think that, ultimately, God IS in charge of wherever there is clarity, truth, love, beauty, and all the threads in the tapestry that is Reality. The spaces between the threads which we mistakenly attribute to reality are wherever there is suffering, death, and loss...

10. Will your Y2K preparation actions help you & others?

I hope not. ;) Canned ravioli gets old after awhile. (here's to hoping it's a BITR)

11. Do you mostly trust Bill Clinton about Y2K?

No.

12. Do you like football?

I like the plays, not sitting around in between plays and listening to the stupid commentary and commercials. So, my ADD often gets in the way of a good game.

13. Can you survive on the land?

I camp. I have tools. I read field guides and books on "how to survive in the woods." I have made up my mind that I WILL.

14. Can you change the water pump on a car?

No.

15. Are you happy about your life, currently?

Yes, when I can forget about the news and about y2k.

16. If the proposition is false is the statement false?

Yes.

17. Do you know any line(s) from Shakespeare's plays?

Yes.

18. Have you ever read C.S. Lewis?

Yes, my dear Screwtape.

19. Was Charles Duke a Black man?

I donno.

20. Is there absolute truth?

Absolutely. Why? To say that there is NO absolute truth is in itself an absolute statement and self-nullifying...But the closer you look at the objective truth, the fuzzier and more smeared it gets. Furthermore, by the time we are able to properly focus our eyes on it, it changes and moves somewhere else. When we observe something we change it and nothing we see is in its pristine state...That's the human condition...Our own observation and perception is impossible to disentangle from absolute truth...

I'm in favour of reform of the off-side rule. 13. Can you survive on the land? Ex-inhabitant of hippy commune in the Sixties.
