Armored Cars to Guard County Checks for Y2K

LOS ANGELES--The County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved spending $141,000 to hire armed guards and armored cars to deliver general relief checks in the event of a year 2000 crisis. Although the county says its computers are free of any year-2000 problems, each department has drawn up contingency plans in case of failures from the computer bug, which could lead the first date of the new year to be read as the first date of 1900. The welfare office has printed January's welfare and general relief checks a month early and will mail out welfare checks in the event of a crisis, county records show. But people on general relief do not have a fixed address and will have to come to bulk storage facilities to pick up their money. Hence the armed guards and armored cars.

Many places printed January's checks in November or December.
