More terrorists caught tonight

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I just heard (12/13) on CBS News that 12(?) members of Osama Bin Ladin's group were arrested in an undisclosed country (country's name couldn't be told because of national security matters).

Has anyone else hear this or other info about the arrest?

Same information was on the hourly broadcast on KCBS from CBS late edition in the Bay area. Again no country specified. Wonder how close the thread a few posts down is to reality...(Bioterrrorism from Rainman)

Terrorist cell members arrested

Tuesday, 14 December 1999 1:04 (GMT)

(UPI Focus) Terrorist cell members arrested WASHINGTON, Dec. 13 (UPI) - Members of a suspected terrorist cell have been arrested in an unidentified Middle Eastern country, accused of planning attacks against Americans, U.S. officials said Monday night. An administration official, who asked not to be identified, said the investigation is still ongoing, and further details would compromise operations. But the official said the alleged attack was intended to coincide with New Year's celebrations overseas and prompted a State Department warning to Americans overseas during the holiday season. Though the official and others would not say how many people had been arrested as part of the operation, the cell members apprehended were said to be connected to Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden. The official said the arrests were made because the group was believed to be connected to a threat against Americans that officials already had deemed "credible." The revelation follows the Saturday warning to Americans overseas of possible holiday attacks by terrorists. The State Department warned Americans abroad to take extra security precautions from now through the first week of January. On Sunday, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright did not identify what groups U.S. officials were concerned about, other than the fugitive bin Laden, who has been charged with conspiracy and murder in the 1998 bombing of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, which killed more than 200 people. Bin Laden is believed to be living in Afghanistan under the protection of its ruling Taliban militia, and the United States and international community have been turning up the pressure to get him expelled. Albright said, "We are concerned, obviously, because there are a lot of activities going, and I think there are more specific indications." The State Department said the United States had "credible information that terrorists are planning attacks specifically targeting Americans during the period of time leading up to and through the beginning of New Year." The public move was significant, as scores of Americans are planning millennium celebrations both at home and abroad.

Whew! Thanks to our boys, who risked it all to bring in the 12 terrorists in cahoots with Osama bin Laden.

-- Hokie (nn@va.com), December 13, 1999.

Hokie; You are wrong. There are fine young men and women who are willing to put their asses in "harms way" for shits like yourself, who are only willing to be "smart asses". Perhaps, child, you have no concept of what it is like to walk into a group of people who would delightedly kill you (if they only knew who you worked for) and try to weedle and cajole a tidbit of information from them so that your people could tag-em-and-bag-em later on. You are a child.

What kind of name is Hokie anways? He's probably a bit pokie on prepping too.

-- Forum Critic (need@a.life), December 13, 1999.

Yea, and I bet these terrorists pigs get a "fair" trial and just spend some time in jail. Wouldn't it just be easier to let the men and women who caught them put a bullet in each of their heads and end the whole situation. Obviously, the terrorists could care less about us so, lets show them the same.

Familyman wants to live in a Police State, governed by mob rule! Personally, I prefer due process.

Dot:

Due process?? I see. And you think these pigs deserve a fair trial. Fine. So be it. But, when they are found guilty, execute them immediately. There.."Due Process". That also goes for rapists, murderers, pedophiles and the like. Sorry, but these types of crimes deserve death.

No, you don't put bullets in their heads.

If you do that, you won't be able to persuade them to spill the beans on their higher-ups.

The Ruskies, despicable as they are, *know* how to deal with terrorists. When a KGB agent was kidnapped by some terrorists, the *other* KGB agents in the area did their homework, found out who the terrorists were, kidnapped *their* relatives, and started mailing body parts back, one at a time, along with demands that the KGB agent be returned alive.

He was.

THAT is how you "negotiate" with terrorists.

Being "reasonable" with them -- or, simply putting a bullet in the head -- accomplishes nothing.

Ron:

Good point. I just hope that more are caught. It's such a cowardly act.

-- Familyman (prepare@home.com), December 14, 1999.

Getting caught isn't enough. They have to get caught *before* they strike.

For all the stupidity our government has demonstrated recently, I hope they have put the *best* guys available on the job of hunting down those bastards.

All these guys need to do is prove that they are Puerto Ricans, and they will receive get out of jail free cards from Hill and Billary.

Tell you what #3, if I misunderstood what Hokie was implying, why hasn't he taken the time to defend himself. Perhaps I was wrong, but something tells me I wasn't. When Hokie tells me I was, I will appologize. Meantime, butt out #3.

Although my first though would be to burn them after interrogation the christian side of my brain tells me that a single bullet to the head would be appropriate and far less cruel. Afterwords, assuming the terrs were Iraqi, we should completely flatten Bagdad. I hate terrorists more than just about anything.

P.S. ...And I would have no problems with pulling the trigger personally. I cherish life, won't squash a bug and teach my son the same but terrs don't deserve the consideration a slug deserves.
