Hi my name is Dominic P.Ladue Sr., I live in essex junction vermont,I own my own buisness, my wife Cathy is a manager with 2 years managing burgerking in essex junction vermont, come gust 2000 ,she has been there 3 years.
Burger king in essex is grossly understaffed, the store manager, has e shift well stocked with employees, my wife has no porter, has to do her opening work, then porter work, then prep, then the truck comes in, she has to nload the truck, the owner is Jim, he seems not to care.
My wife has come home with bruises from lifting boxes, she has bruises on her arms, on her breasts, legs, all for 8.00 per hour, while the regular employees start at 7.50 per hour.
I want to see a franchise fine levied against him, or better yet , would love to see Jim loose the franchise name.

Well, I dont have an answer but basically all BKS treat people like slaves. GMs are prejudice bastards! My GM told me to cut my hair, and yet a shift supervisor at another store in the GMs same district has hair that is 2 feet long. Pisses me off! I should take him to court for remarks of prejudice. GMs are fake in everyway possible toward employees. They dont like us and they dont care. They complain about every mistake made in the store and yet the average store makes $1,000,000 a year.

You have to get a grip on life. Your wife chooses to work those hours, and perform the work of porter and putting away the truck. If she really does not like doing that, then she should go back to being a crew member, or seek employment somewhere else. There must be something she likes about the job, or she would not be there! As far as staffing, lots of restaurants are under staffed. The real problem, from the information I have, is that there is no team work at your wifes work. Now that comes from the top, and works it way down. I the employees are working as a team, everyone would be helping to fill the positions when the store is short staffed.
As far as the person with the hair cut. Your GM should not have to tell you what the standards are for your hair. They are clearly outlined in your employee hand book. You should know what they are, and follow them with out being told. If you choose not too, then you would be subject to dicapline action, up to termination. What the GM does in other stores has nothing to do with your employement.

I have been working for Burgerking for 16yrs now. Iam a General Manager also. I personally feel it is up to your GM to sort out the problems in store. When i was training to be a Manager i too had hard times too ,but it was my job and i loved it.So stop moaning if u dont like it then find other employment.

I am a manager at a Burger King in Ohio, and they do treat employees like slaves. My store manager thinks he is pimping someone. If something isn't his way it doesn't happen. What he needs done comes first. He tries to run everyone and treats his employees like shit. I am looking for a new job because they suck. I was told my doctor's appt. didn't matter. Their kids don't matter to them so they think mine doesn't either. I haven't called off in 5 years and they still treat me like shit. I have the most experience in the store, but they don't seem to care. We are required to work 50-60 hours per week but when you figure out my hours divided by pay... I make less than the highest paid crew member, They seem to think they can treat us how they want. They have already lost many customers because of their lack of respect to us and the customers... Now they will lose more. Myself and many of my crew included so to Burger King. I say:GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So to dominic: I agree with you, my husband does too. He is ready to whip someones ass!!!!!!!!!

i would just like to say that i do not agree with any of your comments. I work in burger king in perth, scotland and it is one of the best jobs i have ever had. the restaurant opened 3 months ago and it was tough at first but we pulled together. everybody gets along really well and we work as a team. the managers help a lot and do not treat us like kids. okay, so sometimes the work is shit, but you get that in any job.

Well i have i have to is to work as a team. Treat crew the way you wanted to be treated. Yes turnover rate is bad but keep looking you will find crew that will work their hardest for you . You have to lead for them to fallow. I was crew i work hard and made it to storesuperivor but it take finding a good management team and a boss who care for his stores. Granted we dont have a lot of stores but well all work together.As for the hair just keep it neat and there is no big deal look the part you know.Is not an easy job we all took on but we love it to do it for so long.Its is the people coming in to our store that make the job just remember them . For putting away the truck it is a team job i would just wish that your crew would want to work to gether and be one with you im so sorry about that i wish i could help all of the people in burger king . I work for the Burger King in Bradley, Illinois. I started there last September and at that time there was an established crew there that worked togeather very well, the flow was good, and there was very little conflict. However, in December another company took over and the store has rapidly gone downhill since then.
Our new GM seems to be running on self-destruct. She hasn't been able to hire a single person who will stay, she abuses and basically runs over her crew. New hires are lasting less than a month and I am one of 3 people who were there when the changeover took place who is still there. Even our managers are quitting or transferring elsewhere. Basically, we can't keep anyone, and instead of correcting the problem our owners have chosen to ignore it completely.
It is just plain impossible to keep good people here. It's impossible because they don't get treated like human beings, they never see any sort of evaluation or raise, and when the new owners took over we had the rug pulled out from under us when it came to our benefits. We now have none at all and pay is only $6 an hour here for crew.
Basically what it comes down to is this. When it comes to training management corporate needs to take over again and do it right. These individual francise owners just are not doing the job the way it should be done! It seems to me that legal issues need to be an important part of that training too.
Why? In my store we have labor violations right and left. We have them because our regional manager is showing our managers how to do it. For instance, if it is busy and HER boss is expected no one gets a break at all, but she clocks us out herself to make it look like we have had one. Often we find our overtime has been adjusted off when we get our paychecks - so we aren't being paid for it, and then IF someone fusses she will adjust those hours over to the next period with a manual entry. There is more too.
I have degrees in accounting and business and live in an area where there have been more layoffs in the past year than new jobs. I took this job because I was being hired for management at that time. To the man complaining about all the work his wife has to do - guess what, in my store I'm the person who does all that. My satisfaction will come after I do leave the hellhole I work in! Why? There isn't another person in my store who knows what has to be done, how to do it, or who will lift a finger to do anything at all if they aren't directly told to do it.
If Burger King Corporation doesn't want their entire company to fold and go under at a Rocket pace like Hardees (all of our have already been closed here)they need to get on the ball with their franchise owners and fix the problem fast!!!

I work at a BK franchise in Australia (Hungry Jack's) and I have to say it pretty much sucks. It's not the work, or the lousy pay, but the fact that everything is done to save money. So many people I know get ripped off, eg no penalty rate, get ripped off a couple hours a week, getting underpaid etc. It's this sort of dodgy stuff that managers do to pull up the profits to make a few lousy bucks extra. BTW, if this ever happens to you call the head office and get onto your state manager and tell them you're being ripped off, they will almost always sort out the problem straight away. Either that or get your parents to call the store - scares the managers shitless

I am shocked and disgusted in the policy of the local Burger Kings in Queens N.Y. They absolutely refuse to provide paper cups for water, thereby denying their customers the right to have water. This is against the law and I am considering a class action law suit. Do these idiots think they are above the laws of the U.S.? Most of these Burger kings out here are run and managed by individuals from " developing countries" and they have'nt a clue as to how paying customers should be treated. They bring with them a warped sort of frugality that is beyond thrifty. It is downright cheap and offensive to the sensibilities of most Americans. The only reason they get away with it is because the majority of the customers in places like Woodside and Sunnyside, N.Y. are immigrants who just don't know any better. Shame on Burger king for con

I also worked for Jim in The South Burlington VT location. At the very least he should be fined for healt violations. I care not go into much detail but lets say on his order burgers that were cooked at another store and transported to our Location in the morning were left out on a counter and served throughout the day because the broiler was broken. I personally care not to eat a burger that was cooked seven hours ago and has been sitting on the boards all day. Another time he made one of my co workers go out side with a pair of rubber gloves and clean up dead seagulls in the driveway, then back to work as normal. Personally I could not tollerate working for him, the job was ok unless he was around, thats when all this stuff took place.

If your wife is a manager then she should accept the responsibilities. I run a BK that has highly proficient employees. How does that happen? You train and delegate. Short staffed I know what that is like! Two crew and one manager can get a lot of work done in the morning. Most BKs do less than $500 for Bfast sales anyways and you can do that with 2 crew and a manager while still doing truck, lot, cleaning, prep, and giving excellent service. As far as a porter goes, I have never had one. You don't need one if everyone does there job and works together. Supervising employees, observing them to determine where improvement is needed will improve day to day operations as well as the proficiency of the crew. Furthermore it gives the crew dignity in there job and makes them feel important. When that happens they will work there heart out for you and all you need to do to maintain this is positive feedback when managing them. There has been many days where I have felt the same as your wife by accepted the job in management and I will not sink I will swim. It is all about wanting to be successful! As far as your wife getting bruises from truck. When I start to put the truck away I have a couple of crew that chip in and help as there are many times there are no customers in the morning. It's all about working together. One person cannot run a BK but a team can. Even if you are short staffed you can run a BK. My avg employee makes $9 an hour so that means I have to run less employees. I will run 7 for lunch giving less than 30 second transaction times doing a $400+ half hour and a $1250 lunch. I am disgusted when I go to a dirty BK that has 10+ employees. Then they have slow service. I would only dream of having that many employees. In my opinion there are a lot of employees and managers that can do more and improve the BK name but until they learn to delegate and communicate with there immediate supervisor when there is a problem instead of complaining to the world on the internet it will never happen. Maybe it was not time to be promoted to management. All I know is that I would not take on the additional responsibility for only 50 cents more an hour. But if you cant stand up to the manager and owner and delegate duties to the crew then you need to drop back down to a crew. Good luck and remember you can run your shifts the way you want! Work hard and give great service and do a great job and the owner will soon see you are running better shifts than the General Mangager who has more crew! Then he will have egg on his face! Some managers are scared that a new manager may do better so they short staff them because of there insecurities. I personally run short on my shifts to prop up my managers so I dont have to worry about them giving bad service and having to be in a bad situation. I hope this helps and remember no matter what you have the ability to change and improve things for the better. Positive attitude and initiative will do it!
