Welllll....here Ya' go! Our Govt has decided to take it upon themselves to SUE gun manufacturers....or apply pressure so they stop advertising their guns to kids and criminals....makes sense to me!

U.S. Plans to Sue Gun Industry Wednesday, December 08, 1999 By Andrea Shalal-Esa

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Clinton administration said on Tuesday it would file a class action lawsuit against the gun industry next year unless manufacturers agree to make major changes in the way they market and distribute guns. Administration officials said the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is readying a lawsuit on behalf of 3,200 public housing authorities around the country to recover the costs associated with gun violence, estimated at around $1 billion a year.

While the sum is significant, one HUD official said the lawsuit's "primary interest will be to change the way the gun industry does business."

Twenty-eight cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco, already have sued makers of handguns to get reimbursement for municipal spending related to gun violence -- on police and emergency medical services, for example.

But the administration felt a more national approach was needed, said the HUD official. "This is a massive problem that is facing the United States," the official said. "There is an epidemic of gun violence. Somewhere close to 100 people every day are dying of gun violence." More than 600,000 crimes are committed each year involving guns, and 30,000 people die each year due to gun-related violence, the official said, citing Justice Department statistics. "The federal government believes the problems that have been identified are real ones, and they are not limited to the 28 entities that have sued," he said. "They are problems of a national scope."

Administration officials said the federal class action lawsuit was intended to put pressure on the gun industry to settle the existing lawsuits and agree to a series of reforms.

The federal government wanted gun manufacturers to take responsibility for its chain of distribution and cut off dealers whose guns wind up being used in crimes, officials said.

It also wanted manufacturers to adopt use of child safety locks and to stop targeting advertising to criminals and children, they said. "Ultimately, we would like the gun industry to settle their suits with the cities and we would like to achieve changes in the way they market and distribute guns to reduce the chances of guns getting into the wrong hands," said one White House official.

"What we hope is that it will encourage them to come to the table and to alter their behavior," he said. Administration officials said HUD was taking the lead on the lawsuit with President Clinton's explicit blessing. "The president believes we've got to take action in this country to reduce the availability of guns to criminals, to children, to others who should not have them," the White House official said. "He has fought for changes in the law and he'll continue to make this a priority," the official added.

Clinton has pushed hard for Congress to adopt gun control measures and increase funding for law enforcement of existing gun laws. In September, he offered cities across the nation $15 million to buy back and destroy about 300,000 guns.

One Justice Department official said HUD had been in talks with public housing authorities for some time, and the lawsuit was being finalized now, although they still hoped that gun manufacturers would seek a settlement.

"They have a suit ready to go," the official said. Clinton administration officials first disclosed that HUD was considering suing the gun industry last July.

A federal class action lawsuit against gun manufacturers follows on the heels of a major lawsuit filed earlier this year against the tobacco industry to recover much of the $20 billion spent by the federal government each year on smoking-related illnesses. [Eand of Story]

Know what I think? We should file against the car manufacturers...after all...their ads are directed towards teens and kids....rember the commercial: Two kids walking along sidewalk at night...car goes by-kids stare wonderingly...then fast forward and the kid is grown and driving HIS car and two new kids stare....on and on it goes. But many more people die from car accidents than guns every year...so sue 'em!

Pool manufacturers too...lots of people drown every year...and they target kids in their ads...

The electric companies...people are electrocuted each year...dangerous stuff!

Water authorities...people drown and die from contaminants...

So....let's get to it...so many companies we can sue!

Sue the Gov....they make me sick and it's gonna kill me eventually.

This is BULLSH*T! What next? Sue Spray Paint companies for Graffitti cleanup costs??

The only thing they want to "CHANGE" is the fact that Americans can own guns..period.

If someone here thinks that GUNS in homes, and having kids around guns causes the problems we are having in this country, then I suggest you look at the history of SWITZERLAND where there are guns in every home, and have been for countless years. Not only that, but the KIDS comptete in GUN FIRING CONTESTS year round, and GUN FESTIVALS are part of LIFE there. How many wars has SWITZERLAND been in? What is thier gun related crime rate??

When the govt comes knocking on my door asking for me guns, I will give them UP... but first I'll give them my ammunition...bullet at a time...

It is just incredible how we give up our RIGHTS. I cannot imaging how dumb EVERYONE is... WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE??? It just does not bother anyone!!! People say you're an extremist when you refuse to give up YOUR rights... Thousands if not millions of people died defending this country from the very beginning and we are just going sit there on our ASSES and be happy with our stock market doing so great... what does it matter if you're SELLING your freedom...

The moment guns are banned in United States I WILL MOVE to Cuba...where the govt dictates how you live your life, where you have no freedom of religion, no free market.. no right to bear arms....NOTHING... and that is what we will have here the moment our guns are taken away... You just watch....

All of you are WEAK SHEEP... what will it take for you to WAKE UP?????

Accidental deaths per physician ...0.171

Number of gun owners in the U.S. ...80,000,000

Additionally, all auto manufacturers need to be brought into bankrupting, legal jeopardy for the unsuspecting masses of dead produced year after year in the ongoing, ignored vehicular slaughter of children.....and women.

Trial lawyers: This is your cue !!

I think the real motive here is to test the patience of the American people. Guess what Willie ? You are just about there.

I think the real motivation is to test the moderators of this forum. This thread has nothing to do with Y2K.

Doomers who think Klinton is a shill for the NWO and who think the declaration of martial law on 12/28/99 will end constitution rule must wonder why the government would start at this late hour a suit that relies upon a functioning constitutional judiciary. This either proves that the government is not planning to abrogate the constituion, or that the government is not fibbing about the CDC problems - thay are just as totally clueless as the rest of us.

No, no, no, that can not be it. They must have started this legal action just to confuse us. Of course those nazi's have no plans to actually go through with the suit. They are just trying to fivert our attention. After martial law is declared, they won't neet no steeenkmn suit, they will just kill all us gun owners and take our guns.

Wondering,

Jesus Christ! What ever happened to being responsible for your actions??? And if some of these thugs would get off their asses and off the government tit and get a JOB, they wouldn't have so much free time to victimize decent people.

Open your eyes Uncle Sam....U ARE A BIG PART OF THE PROBLEM!

well...whatever it is....a cover up and up-and-up...it's still B.S.,. So why don't you wrap up in your sheepskin and bend-over and take it the way you'll learn to love...I don't see the moderators complaining.

Klintoon sucks. He should be concentrating his efforts on suing McDonalds and Burger King for all that greasy fried food he's stuffed into his big FAT ASS! It isn't his fault he's a glutton. They should have known he would missuse their product. Let's get that Ronald McDonald guy and his burger hounds from Hell!

This press release is so full of holes, logical fallacy, and sheer B.S. that it's hardly worth the effort any more to debunk it all. Suffice to say that corruption and deception in certain circles apparently knows no bounds.

Here's a piece from a while back. Maybe this administration simply wants to clear out the domestic arms market so that the foregin black markets have free rein. That way, you're still free to exercise your constitutional rights if you can either afford to buy from the static pool of increasingly obsolete domestic arms or you're willing to allow yourself to be forced into breaking the "law" in order to make your purchases from what I'm sure will be a more than adequate selection of foreign arms smugglers.
