Franklin Frith: Nationwide "Peacekeeping" Exercise Planned for Y2K

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Franklin Frith has posted an article of his own composition quoting from NG, FEMA and DOD sources -- mostly familiar around here -- tied together under the theme of martial law/"peacekeeping" over Y2K.

The NEW and rather interesting thing here is, he's included photos of the white Chevy suburbans (or some other SUVs) with the RIGHTHAND SIDE STEERING WHEELS (unles of course the negatives were flipped) which I believe were referred to in the Al Cuppet interview which he posted December 3, 1999.

SH - the question about flipping the negative intrigued me ... so I looked a little closer.

(I have this 'thing' about truth and accuracy of 'facts.' Call it an obsession if you wish. Guess I took one of Reagan's lessons to heart - "Trust, but VERIFY!)

If you look at the vehicles in the second row, take notice the decal in the windows on the left hand side of the vehicles.

In the picture showing the decals close-up, further up the page from the one emphasizing the left side steering wheel, you will note they consist of a large one with a smaller one to its right. The area above the smaller decal leaves a 'hole' in what would otherwise be a larger white rectangle ... i.e. from a distance this MAY appear as 'black square' in the upper right hand corner of the decal.

This is in fact what is observed in the decal sequence of the vehicles in the second row of the questioned photo...A black square in the upper right hand corner.

Therefore, it can be concluded that the photo has NOT been mirrored, and the contention that the vehicle has the steering wheel on what would normally be the passenger side can be considered to be accurate.

Attention to details is everything. :-)

BTW: in photographic analysis, the use of left and/or right hand side refers to the the perspective derived from the photo of the object being analyzed ... not the object itself.

If reference is intended to be relative to the object itself, it will be annotated as such.

This is derived from a principle in Physics which states that Everything (in this case, direction) is relative to the observer.

one final nit-picky point, and I promise I will be quiet for the moment :-)

flipping - rotation of an image about the horizontal axis.

mirroring - rotation of an image about the vertical axis.

Therefore in your post - the reference to "(unless of course the negatives were flipped)" should have read "(unless of course the negative was mirrored)"

(single picture = single negative) - oops, sorry could not resist! :-)

no flames ... please?

To those of us in civilian photography and advertising, "flipped' was the correct term, as in "flip the neg over and print it right this time!"

At some point, someone is also going to have to show me that when the drive is switched the wipers are switched to pivot from the left instead of the right (as observed standing in front of the cars).

I'm NOT convinced, since I can't see the logo on the front or the plate (if such existed) and I can't see the windshields well enough to see either wiper mount direction OR windshield sticker configuration. ( I understand about the side window configuration but I would like to see the windshield config as the side window config will be small sticker towards the front of the care reversed neg or not).

The passenger side of the vehicle in question still has the handle at the front of the door inside (to help pull oneself out) -supporting correct orientation of the posted photo.

The adjacent vehicles have the correct location for radio antenna if you look closely - also supporting correct orientation of the posted photo.

Looks like a genuine riht hand side steering wheel model. unless doctored very well.

Well,I only looked at the words on the right window. What does GSA stand for?

Yes they would switch wiper-pivot sides when switching steering wheel sides. Think about the clearing area.

The gas caps are on the correct (left) side, which means....

That really is a Right-drive vehicle. But why would they want RD trucks on American roads? Funny business.

Postal trucks (mail carriers) in rural areas have the steering wheel on the right so that they can put the mail in the box. One reasonable possibility for the vehicles
