Yoo-hoo, Ken! Here's the analysis you requested

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Here you are Ken...a breakdown, albeit a subjective one using my own grading system, of all 127 posts from yesterday. As you can see, only 6 fell into your "Lunatic Fringe" category, proving indubitably that your brain is inserted in your skull somewhat cockeyed, or possible even cattywhompas. Have fun with your dissection kit - careful with that scalpel!

Only "a" is capable of such breathtaking logic. For the die-hard pessimist EVERYTHING is Y2K-related. Here's the bonus question: How many of the above threads contributed to the overall understanding of Y2K and are carefully grounded in facts... not speculation?

Hmmm, looks like pretty much all the threads listed are Y2K related and based on more than media blather. Pretty nifty trick -- to read all those and come up with a goose egg on your valid-information- meter.

-- TA (sea_spur@yahoo.com), December 07, 1999.

Ken,

"How many of the above threads contributed to the overall understanding of Y2K and are carefully grounded in facts... not speculation?"

Depends on how the terms are defined. Please take a look at your own contributions of the past few weeks and tell us which of them meet this criteria, and why.

After reading this and another thread discussing the "quality" of post s on the forum, I think there are several factors at play.

1. Most of the intense dialogue that is frequently mentioned from the past, is irrelevent now. Weren't those conversations had with the idea to prep or not in mind? People have either prepared or they haven't at this point. What's to discuss?

2. Many "failures" or even other newsworthy items are rarely thought of as significant, even by those who realize the media is manipulated, if it doesn't happen TO YOU. For example, it was really shocking to the people of Denver, to learn that they had been living on top of deadly Rocky Flats, but to the rest of the country, who cares? It seems that even now, unless it's reported by one of the big three,(ABC, CBS, NBC) it "isn't that big a deal" and can be disregarded or ignored into the background.

There have been and continue to be serious disruptions -we're not in 2000 yet - and one of the main points is, how many simultaneous problems can we survive?

3. There are a lot of newcomers here (I've been here only since September), and many are asking questions that have been painstakingly hashed out before.

4. This is also the most bizarre situation to find ourselves in. Is there a "good" way to deal with the bizarre?

5. With the non-transparency of most organizations, what "facts" can we possibly debate. The "religion" of Y2K, if there is one, is simply this.

IT DOESN'T MATTER WHEN WE STARTED OR HOW MUCH WE HAD TO DO, OR HOW MUCH MONEY WE SPENT OR DIDN'T - WE WILL BE "READY". NO PROBLEM!!!

Mr. Decker,

Don't you just love it when some poor soul doesn't have enough vocabulary to say anything more than, "You're fat! You're stupid! You're ugly! I think your logic intimidates them to the point of regression.

I just went through that list of posts and found a few additional posts to be irrelevant to Y2K:

If this forum was owned by Big Brother, the headlines wo

Despite Rhetoric, Violent Crime Climbs; Updated '69 Study Shows Increase of 40% in Cities

The "Mad Max" Plan For Martial Law

However, the majority of the posts do seem to be on topic. I think the lunatic fringe are the people who are responding inside the posts, not necessarily the people posting new questions. After all, the lunatics have nothing better to do than throw in 1-3 lines of hate and stupidity. They couldn't possibly put together a full post of anything that would contribute to the understanding of Y2K or the improvement of mankind.

There are just some people who are happy being miserable, and you and I attract them in droves. Although, this is a good thing Ken...they respond to you because they desperately want to believe what you are saying. By yelling at you, they keep your attention, and keep you in this forum. You are like sunlight to them. Don't let them get you down Mister...just keep shining.

-- (Ladylogic@aol.com), December 08, 1999.

Ladylogic (?) It's hard to know what to make of your response. It seems like it's addressed to Ken Decker, but he didn't write this thread nor contribute an answer. Some of the thread titles you refer to actually back up the originator of this thread, yet you seem to think they support Decker.

Then you basically say that, "If we believe things are good, and have a "positive" attitude, everything will be OK".

To me that is the quintessential psychological attitude of a whole generation - so egocentric it's really pretty laughable.

-- Gregg (g.abbott@starting-point.com), December 08, 1999.

Gregg,

First, my initial point was misunderstood. I feel Y2K deserves a better hearing... and it deserves better than having half wits argue the pessimist perspective. As noted, I respect de Jager, Yardeni, even Yourdon. It has been disappointing more "serious" thinkers have not engaged in the Y2K discussion.

My point was not that the majority of posts are "off topic." Many of the "on topic" posts are really bizarre or baseless speculations about Y2K. Do you expect me to take "Mr. CEO" seriously? Do you think the subject of martial law and a Clinton dictatorship warrants serious dicussion? Where are the posts about actual embedded chips that are noncompliant or software that definitively will not function? Where are detailed analysises of the NERC, FDIC, API reports? You may disagree, but I think the UN/NWO folks are the "lunatic fringe." I think talking about a cabal of international bankers controlling the world is silly... and has little to do with Y2K.

As for "manipulation" of the media... I think there are a huge number of voices out there. Art Bell and Jeff Rense have their moment in the sun... so do the cable networks, the major newspapers, etc.

As for the serious disruptions thus far, you make Hoffmeister's argument for him. We are still functioning despite the "interconnected" nature of our economy. How many can we survive. Obviously more than most pessimists think.

To your final point, the "religion" of Y2K is the belief in the Apocalypse despite the facts to the contrary. It is the flat refusal to consider factual information... like on this forum.

Don't judge a thread by its title; the referenced threads are "On Topic" for Y2K and are not part of the lunatic fringe. Read them yourself and decide.

-- madeupname (notme@notaddy.com), December 08, 1999.

Ken,

Unverifable information. Big issue.

Simply put, if most computers in the world didn't need fixing, NOBODY would be spending money trying. We only have self-reported information from most companies. It's in their self interest to lie.

Without independent verification, it means little that they say they are, in most cases, only "ready".

I won't bother directing your attention to the many, many posts and 10-Q statements, which leave vast and huge holes in a companies' readiness status.

As for Martial Law, just read Presidential Decision Directive #63, signed by Clinton in May of '98. I'm sorry you don't understand global economics enough to realize the Central Banks ARE a nice, tight little group of self serving elitists. It makes their job so much easier to have an ill informed populace. Do you know what the BIS is? Do you think it exits to help YOU?

-- Gregg (g.abbott@starting-point.com), December 08, 1999.

Gregg,

Of course many systems require upgrade or replacement. They did before Y2K and will in the future. Private firms need offer anyone an explanation. Public companies owe only their shareholders. If shareholders are unhappy, they can vote with their pocketbooks.

I wrote an entire thread about the incentive "not to lie." Any company found deliberately falsifying information will be subject to legal AND economic penalties. If you have a vendor that can't deliver because of Y2K, he'll lose your business. The marketplace will punish the unready... as it should.

Independent verification is a straw man. If it was profitable, or the shareholders demanded it... there would be independent verification. As it stands, the public is satisfied with the explanations. You may not find this situation tolerable... but you have no "right" to any explanation unless you own the entity.

As for martial law, the President can sign anything he wants... but the U.S. military is simply incapable of enforcing anything close to martial law. Period. We hardly survive "peacekeeping" missions in third world countries with a fraction of the size or resources.

As for the international bankers... there is scant evidence of a "cabal." Central banks are often at odds over monetary policy. And as far as suffering personally... if the banks are torturing me, I haven't felt it. (chuckle)

Laura says to Ken, "There are just some people who are happy being miserable, and you and I attract them in droves." Too funny! This, from someone who goes out of her way to camp out in the TB2000 chatroom, stealing other people's names, spamming with her "enter" key so that everyone else is blocked from posting, and assaults both men and women with sexual comments so crude they might make even the King of Spain nauseous...

a and troll patrol,

Thanks for proving my point.

Lunar tick,

The fact that you included my post, "Got the flu--chemtrail poisoning?" in the lunatic fringe catagory says wonders about your cognative ability. Better reread it.

Lunar tick? Maybe. Lunatic? Definitely.
