Storm comparison in New Mexico

I live in sunny Arizona. I just returned home today from a trip visiting in-laws in Illinois. On our way back, we happened to run into a little winter storm while we were in the pan handle area of Texas heading west on I40. We had to stop and stay in a motel Saturday evening because the road was closed. The next day, bright and early my wife,3 kids,6,4,and 3yrs, and myself started out. We traveled approx. 27 miles in 5 hours. There was a line of semi's that stretched I would say 30 miles solid....not a one was moving. The interstate was closed from Amarillo to the New Mexico border. We eventually were able to get turned around, go back east, then south and then west eventually making it home. Now, I'm a desert dweller by birth but I hear that as storms go, this was not that big of a storm and yet traffic was backed up and at a standstill for hours causing delays in the delivery of products. The comparison isn't hard to get. If we are being told to prepare for a 3 day storm, then what kind of storm? Can even a small storm nation wide cause everything to come to a standstill even if only for a short period of time? Now, maybe things wouldn't have been so bad in my little story if the road officials had been more efficient and had been better prepared. They probably thought they were but.......guess again. Not well enough. Anyway, I couldn't help hearing those words going thru my head....It's just gonna be a little storm.....no big deal. Ed if you happen to read this, how did you fare thru this storm...did it hit your way?

I was in Pittsburgh, on business, yesterday so I didn't know about the storm. In any case, I live in northern NM, about 50 miles south of the Colorado border -- so we tend to have very different weather than the middle and southern part of the state....

The storm you were talking about was a small storm for this time of year. They ALWAYS close I-40 from Clines Corners, NM to the Texas state line when even a little snow falls... Ain't no thang... That was a ONE DAY storm.

Snoozin' on the porch....
