Last night my husband and I watched Quest for Fire : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

Got matches?

This movie really makes you want to check those match reserves. I'm pretty sure I couldn't start a fire with sticks like Rae Dawn Chong did.

Seriously, it was a very good movie, and it makes you realize the importance of fire.

Actually, using the method she used isn't too hard...preperation is everything! But...I got extra flints and juice for my Zippo as well as a magnesium block firestarter...even eaisier! ;)

I just picked up an interesting book -- _Earthknack : Stone Age Skills for the 21st Century_ by Bart and Robin Blankenship. There are recipes for pine needle tea (don't boil the fresh needles, just steep to preserve C and B vitamins), making soap from clematis, making cord from milkweed pith, etc etc. There is a chapter on making fire, and with this in hand I feel more confident that I'd be able to make fire with sticks if I needed to. And I bet you could too.

FIREMOUSE: Would you be willing to share any of the info. you've gained with us? I'm interested in the Pine Needle tea especially. You just pick 'em off the branch and steep in hot water? How to on the Clematis soap would also be helpful. I doubt seriously I'll be able to get my hands on the above mentioned book before roll-over.
