Olympus d-340r, Canon A50, or ?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I am a complete novice. I have never owned a camera (maybe a polaroid as a child). I am looking for a reasonably priced camera which takes nice pictures. I am mostly interested in on-line representations, but would like the ability to print images with reasonable quality when the occasion arises. I have bid on 4 cameras at auction sites, but have not bid a high enough price. Both the Canon and the Olympus are affordable enough to even buy at a local store. They both seem to take nice pictures. I really do not know the advantage of an optical zoom, but I hear that it is important. I would like to hear any advice about choosing between these two cameras. If a similarly priced camera is even better, I would like to hear about it.

If you can spend about $430, I recommend going with the Olympus D-450Z. It has a 3X zoom lens and takes nice pics automatically. There are also some features on the camera that can be controlled manually, if desired. I believe that if you could use a camera with a zoom lens for a while, you would find that you wouldn't want to be without the zoom. It adds much more versatility to the camera. The 450Z is much like the 340R, but with upgraded features and the zoom.
