A water spill from a bowl on the window ledge over an unpropitious join in the under-house telephone wire shorted out our main system (not the computer line!). Trying to fix it, I found the old wire, much of which is original to the house--1963 on up--is brittle and breaks easily when trying to make new connections. It's been fun at the tiny junction box, where four sets of wires meet and I'm still not finished. Get yourself some spare telephone wire--I bought 50 feet for about $3-4.
