Maine might very well be ready. However, the governor and his emergency management guy, Col. Adams, demonstrated what has become classic Y2K ignorance on Nov. 23 when they were guests on a Maine Public Radio call-in show. The first caller was an self-described elderly woman who was obiviously near panic. She had seen Paula Gordon on C-SPAN the night before and was shocked by what she learned about potential problems. She wanted to know where she could get written verification that Maine's infrastructure was ready. The governor could only restate that he had been told it was ready and that they had been working on the problem for a long time. Then he gave her the 3-day storm spiel. She wasn't buying it. She said she hadn't purchased a generator and wanted to know what she was going to do if the power went out. The governor said the state had some generators, but Adams jumped in and clarified that they were for "centralized use." The governor added that he thought every Mainer should have a generator in their cellar. I hope she doesn't take his advice and gas herself. Of course, he's a millionaire and likely has other people to worry about such things as the proper installation of generators. All in all, the woman gave the impression that she felt betrayed. She has been told for months by the mainstream press that nothing much is going to happen and along comes Paula Gordon and her GWU friends saying we might have to deal with some pretty nasty stuff. She asked the right questions, but too late to make much of a difference. I hope the governor's right.
