Using Photosmart 1100 Printer as a card reader

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I recently picked up an Oly 450 and I'm contemplating how to upload pictures to my pc. I've developed an aversion to plugging in any more devices, and was thinking the Photosmart 1100 might enable me to avoid a card reader or serial cable connection. As best I can tell, it facilitates uploads to pcs, but it doesn't seem the other printers with card slots do. I was wondering if anyone had experience or knowledge as to whether, how, and how well this printer functions as an upload device.

Well the P1000 and P1100 work well but they are not quite as fast as dedicated film readers in my experience. For some reason they take a little longer than parallel or USB readers. Basically you put the smartmedia in the printer and in "My Computer" the photosmart icon shows up and you click on it. From there you can transfer the images very easily. It certainly is foolproof and the printer seems to have great output so I would go with it.

Also, the printer has built-in capability to print from the media without the need to use the computer. This works well, and it is easy to use.
