Sorry, here is the article in its entirety:

13 Guatemalans die in chemical warehouse explosion Copyright ) 1999 Nando Media Copyright ) 1999 Associated Press

GUATEMALA CITY (December 4, 1999 8:56 a.m. EST http://www.nandotimes.com) - Two tanks of chemicals exploded in a chemical warehouse in a major Guatemalan port, killing at least 13 and injuring 80.

The explosion occurred Friday. The warehouse erupted in flames in a commercial district of the Atlantic port of Santo Tomas de Castilla, about 190 miles northeast of the capital, Guatemala City, rescue officials said.

At least 13 people were killed and 80 injured, according to the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction.

The injured were transported to various hospitals with burns. An unknown number of people were evacuated from the area.

Rescue efforts were hampered by a loss of electricity in the area.

Rescue efforts were hampered by a loss of electricity in the area.

-----------------

Perhaps the explosion was the result of a power outage? Or was the outage a result of the explosion? Who knows?

Also, no mention of the type of chemicals, if they were toxic alone and volitile together, and which way the cloud and fallout are headed.

Bottom line, a ripple effect occured.

Get ready and hold on tight this is gonna get difficult at best.

Mike

KaBOOM !! Who said they wanted fireworks for the New Year?

Even the memed media is started to pick up on the fact that explosions / fires / accidents are increasing. Saw it in 3 articles yesterday. Hhhhhmmmm, you don't say. Maybe they'll catch on in 3 weeks -- right about time their clothes are catching on fire.

i wonder. i noticed the three posts on oil/gas explosions the other day and i am trying to figure out if there truly is a rise in these incidents or if we are just getting better coverage of every stinking accident in the us or we are just more sensitive. it would be interesting to see the overall statistics for the u.s. and then the world.

From: Y2K, ` la Carte by Dancr (pic), near Monterey, California

Yesterday, on the radio, I heard a teaser for the upcoming news about how students somewhere locally had been evacuated from school because of some problem at a nearby chemical plant. I was only able to listen to the radio for the next half hour but didn't hear the story. Today I looked for it in the two local papers that we get, but I didn't find anything.

Here in Texas we have 2 plant-explosions (at the same plant) in Deer Park, TX. Thought there was press coverage, as usual.... As usual there were no answers. Vicki
