Un-covered-up? Dis-disinformation?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

Just general Y2K thoughts I'd like to share.

If there really is a disinformation campaign, conspiracy, or cover-up of information concerning Y2K then, unlike other conspiracies which can in theory continue for generations or even longer, this one will be uncovered right on que!

It will be like finding out who really killed JFK, who kidnapped the Lindbergh baby, what happened to D.B. Cooper, or what realy happened in Roswell New Mexico, etc. all rolled into one!

The pages are turning... If there is a cover-up it certainly won't remain covered up. (except for stuff that doesn't really make a big difference anyway)

Even if you really don't care at all about this subject and have tried your best to avoid it altogether, you will find out what the truth of the matter is.

What will happen, will happen. We'll learn a lot about what happens. I'm sure a lot of little problems will be swept under the rug, kept hidden for reasons of embarassment for example. But for the most part there won't be much question about what happened. There can't be anymore conspiracy about that aspect of this. It will be out.

This is not to say conspiracy theories about Y2K will die out. I don't think that will be true at all. Either way, good outcome or bad, there will be theories about who knew what ahead of time.

Exciting time to be alive eh?

Steve

Roswell, did I hear Roswell?

Rick, can we talk about Roswell a little? I know I promised I wouldn't, but I think those UFO's are powered by some very exotic electro/magnetic/anti-gravity technology that could be very useful to us if our grid goes down. They're even better than the new Honda Insight. What say? Also, it seems to be very cheap power that they use, so this could easily be worked into a deregulation situation as well. What say????

gordon... you are so cute!!

i believe you... even if no one else does.

Gordon, the last time you talked about this I posted I had been to Roswell and bought this great souvenir coffee cup. Wanna borrow my coffee cup? Just holding it might allow your slightly twisted brain matter to conjure up an alien or two - or a space ship that generates electricity (got the word in) and hovers over the earth furnishing us with mega-power.

You know Gordon, Marianne, Rick may rub us out, he is so pesky about the rules. What can you do, it's his forum. electricity, electricity, electricity

"Roswell"

Einstien talked about postulating two steps "out there" beyond the known territory and then looking for the intervening step that could get you there logically. This has been done throughout the Y2K discussions knowingly or unknkowingly. Speculate beyond the known then look for evidence to support it. I think it takes a courageous individual to admit this is what he/she has been doing rather than try to convince you pure logic was used. I think we even hide the process from ourselves.

Stepping out into he unknown can be quite uncomfortable for many. For some it's a natural. Some will attack you for trying such things, (Get Down From There! You're Gonna Break Your Neck!).

In that regard the subject of Y2K upsets some people exactly like the subject of Roswell and other unknown, uncomfortable things that some folks find threatening to even consider.

I find it's perfectly normal to postulate the existence of alien space craft and then wonder how they are powered for example. It's just a thought process, not meant to argue the existence of aliens etc. just to get the mental juices flowing in new veins.

It's a "What if" thought experiment. I don't bust my brains over it.

Einstien postulated ideas about light bending in a gravitaional field and then a total solar eclipse came along some interested people looked for the evidence and found it to be true. The rollover will be like that eclipse where theories get proven or disproven.

I'd hope Rick would allow for fanciful discussions on this forum, particularly as it moves from Y2K to Energy in general. Speculation has already been going on. Why not acknowledge and even encourage it? Look at the crazy thought experiments of the physicists like Schoedinger's cat, Maxwell's demon, Einstien's man on a train that travels at the speed of light, etc.

Besides, it

If there are big problems with Y2K, it will be interesting to see how the media handles it since they would have had to been apart of it.

The stage has been set for the story to switch to virus attacks so that is my guess how it will be handled.

Lane wrote about this recently and I for one will be looking into this conspiracy stuff if Y2K is even a 5. Even if they blame it on viruses.

Lane,

Thanks for that link. I didn't know that there was a series being put together for this. I suppose that could raise some public awareness, but not if the Prez gets some new czar appointed to doubletalk it all. I really didn't know you were interested in this subject. Of course my own interest is strictly in regard to cheap electric power that is not tangled up in computer controls (at least on *this* forum). ;-)

I don't know how the Canadian government, my power company, etc. could be held responsible for anything that occurs. We have community access centres across Canada at libraries, municipal offices etc. Everyone in Canada has free access to the internet. Any federal website and most provincial websites, my power company etc. have information on personal preparation. The federal government explicitly states they don't know what will happen. The "Be Prepared, Not Scared" brochure was distributed Canada wide to municipalities, as well as in homemakers magazine. I think they could have done a heck of alot more to promote awareness, but they've covered their asses. I sometimes wonder IF the government was truly aware of the possible consequences and risks, and IF there was a high probability of a fatal or devastating impact to a percentage of Canadians, how could they possibly "warn" people without initiating panic, crime etc. And how long would they tell people to prepare for? MANY people live pay cheque to pay cheque. I know many families with both parents working that have mortage payments, two vehicle payments, loan payments on furniture etc. in addition to their regular monthly expenses. Almost all of these people make good incomes but overspend, and this is true for all of North America. Also, anyone who seeks the information, can definitely find it. You don't have to know what's going to happen, to realize the risk. Also, the Canadian Government just updated their site today with an article on personal preparation for Y2K. They state that they are not advising special precautions for Y2K, but they do give a "reminder" list of essential items to have in case of an emergency. I have been checking the NCPG site, and from what I can understand, IF the need arises, Canadians will be informed should they have to make extra preparations (in addition to the normal prep's that all Canadians make for emergencies-LOL) for Y2K. It is quite clear to me that will be after the fact. I'm glad I live in a "rural" community, as the majority of the people are prepared to some extent without even knowing it, as compared to larger centres - combine those people with the residents that have made extra preparations, and everyone is ready. BTW, the Estevan Credit Union included a brochure in their mailings which gives information on preparation including, Quote, "Buy food staples, water and candles in case energy and/or power supplies are temporarily affected." UnQuote. I have the brochure in front of me. I believe everyone has been subject to some kind of information that outlines personal preparation. The extent of preparations is up to each individual.

Gordon,

Do you own a pick-up? If you do, perhaps you could mount one of those exotic star drives in the back and won't need to worry about gas and oil.

-- Anonymous, December 04, 1999

xBob 1,

Sure do have a pickup truck. Where do I get one of those star drives, or learn a little more about them? I like some of the ideas that Tesla had been working on but no mention of a star drive there either. Is that one of those secret programs the government has been working on, but keeping for themselves? Like all those other advanced programs going on at Groom Lake?

-- Anonymous, December 05, 1999

I don't know of any true star drives. Putting propane gas tanks in the back of a pickup is a realistic option however. There is one interesting drive which I do know about though, a rocket, with no on board fuel, currently being developed. It is lauched and powered by a receptor for an earth bound particle beam.

In the early 60s,myself and some friends were at an amateur music get- together about 3 or 4 miles east of springdale ar. Someone came in the building and was all excited about lights in the sky. We all went outside and lo and behold, there, over springdale was a breathtaking sight! Red lights in a geometric formation were spread across the sky at low altitude. These lights were going in and out of other red lights in triangular patterns. We jumped into my car and headed for springdale. As we drove we watched the lights and they all started moving slowly to the south toward fayetteville. I pulled off the road to turn around and got stuck in the ditch. We watched the lights slowly move into the nite haze over fayettevile and dissapear. Have had one other remarkable UFO sighting but will save that for some other time. In any case, while millions and millions of people scoff at UFOs, I smile quietly and smugly, absolutely convinced of the existence of 'Alien'craft of some kind.

" I smile quietly and smugly" I'll admit, that does sound like I'm ready for the guys in white coats!

-- Anonymous, December 06, 1999

Gordon,

Forgot to mention - Tesla is one of the truly great minds of our century and they are still exploring his theories.

-- Anonymous, December 06, 1999

xBob,

Yes, you are right about Tesla. Some of the things he was working on and proving out were like Star Trek stories of energy fields. "Can you give me more power, Scotty?"....."I'll try Captain, but I'm pushing the limits on the crystals right now as it is." Yep, good stuff.

As far as that other star drive stuff and, what was it you mentioned, receptors? Aren't receptors one of those dino-critters that they were hauling around in the back of some truck in Jurassic Park? Don't think I want to mess with one of those, no siree, even if they give off cheap energy. No siree.
