Which brings us back to Oprah Winfrey and t-ball. Ms. Winfrey had a great chance on her Monday Y2K show to provide the viewing public with a real dialogue on the problem. Instead, in what appeared to be a well-orchestrated public relations effort, government spokespersons like the FAA's Jane Garvey and the FDIC's Donna Tanoue were trotted out to assure the audience that, well, planes won't fall out of the sky and ATMs will work. Only the most dire Y2K scenarios were addressed and "debunked", and not a contrary or independent view was to be found. Oprah put the ball on the tee, and the government's Murderers' Row knocked it right out of the park, time and time again. You could almost see them smirking.

The only one who was realistic on the operah show was the power company spokesman.

Good post, Critt. Shame we can't get this kind of information in front of the masses in the prescious little time they have left to prepare. But, even one more family, or one more person, potentially saved (at least for awhile) by shocking them into action would make such efforts worthwhile.

Thanks.
