Dozens feared buried in gas explosion in Austria 2.37 p.m. ET (1949 GMT) December 2, 1999 VIENNA, Austria (AP)  Dozens of people were believed trapped beneath the rubble of a three-story building that was destroyed in a gas explosion late Thursday in eastern Austria, state media reported.

Some 30 to 40 people are feared to have been inside about 12 apartments in the building in the town of Wilhelmsburg, 35 miles west of Vienna, Austrian state television said.

The army was sent to the scene to begin digging through the rubble for victims.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear and no further details were immediately available.
