OT - Seattle bans Gas Masks - Live Report

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

The Seattle Mayor just declared that you can not be in possession of a gas mask - I just heard this while listening to the Seattle police scanner.

They are also sealing off blocks of the downtown area, I didn't get the chance to write down the locations.

If you have Real Audio, you can listen in yourself:

Er, did they say what you would be charged with? And does this only apply to carrying one in the street? What about just owning, buying, or ordering one?

Seems like very, very shakey legal ground. Which would indicate that he has stopped caring about legality. Ooops. Bad thought. Bad.

Wow, just heard that.....They said that there was a "surplus store" downtown that was selling them, and that they were "angry" that some of the protesters had them. There is also a "no protest" zone that is approximately a 50 block area encompassing the convention center as well as the Westin Hotel (where old slick willy will be staying before and after he addresses the WTO today.

Interesting to see how the cops and National guard arent' attired in matching riot gear. Some have thick, hard plastic body armor, it looks like they are fully protected against anyone who would strike them with a baton, then there are some police whose jobs at the scene appear to be to apply the plastic "flexi cuffs" and they are wearing regular street cop clothes with a windbreaker/rain jacket on top. One thing, all the cops in riot gear all are wearing cargo pants with jam packed pockets, and they also have many pockets on their vests, and belts. They evidently are carrying a bunch of gear... Interesting.

Logically, this means the Seattle police and National Guard will have to start arresting one another for possession and wearing of illegal gas masks!

No. Wait. Sorry. I got confused there for a moment. During an "emergency", the law is whatever the "duly constituted authorities" say it is. Sort of like Queen for a Day, or Yeltsin and his decrees.

We must all be grateful. Let us bow our heads.

When gas masks are outlawed only outlaws will have gas masks.

There have been years of discussions about the lack of public toilet facilities downtown. I can not help but wonder how that has effected the protesters.

Cherri, that's why they need the gas masks.
