VCD is born around 1993 and is very popular in asian countries where having a VCD-player is maybe as comon as having a VTR. VCD Is almost unknown (for regular people) in non asian countries. There are no plans for mass-producing movies in VCD in other-than-asian countries and it's unlikely that there will be, because DVD is becoming popular and thus cheaper.

There are (IMHO) two main reasons to why this forum exists and us to like VCDs: 1) Most of us make our own VCDs out of home movies, which is relatively cheap and easy to do, plus VCD is far more durable than a videotape and has random access, is smaller, and in 10 years from now will have the same quality as today. 2) It's compatible with DVD, so the VCD you make today will be seen in the DVD-player you'll have tomorrow.

One addition. Also in de begin 90's Philips has tried to introduce a CD-I player on the european market. These players were CD-I and Kodak photo CD compatible. During the same time there were a certain amount of movies available in video-shops. Adaptec Easy CD Cr de luxe is still able to produce VCD then can play on CD-I players.
