+ WOOD SPLITTERS : This is not a cooperative prep

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I was at a friend's house the other day and they showed me an interesting wood splitter. It looked much like a ski pole with a two-piece wedge at the bottom. And I admit that I was skeptical that this thing could split logs. But it did, indeed, split logs... with a lot less effort it takes to do the same with other non-powered splitters and axes.

If you have back troubles or aren't up to swinging axe or sledge hammer, this might be just for you.

Woodwiz Splitter $64.95 (s & h not included)

I have no affiliation with this company and do not receive any commissions or discounts by any sales of this product. If you are wondering, I am sending a check for this splitter, tomorrow.

Sincerely,
Stan Faryna

Answers

Stan,

Thanks for the info...

Here's another splitter that's similar to the Woodwiz. The major difference with this one (Smart-Splitter) is that it has a guide bar for the spitting head to slide on.

The other major difference is that it's twice the price of the Woodwiz (on sale right now for $120.00 as opposed to yours which is $65.00.)

Smart-Splitter

Hmmm... Now I'm in a quandry - I'd like to buy the Smart-Splitter but I'm unsure if it's worth twice as much as the Woodwiz. :-/

Those cutsey-pie wood splitters are only useful if you have easy to split wood that you could do with an axe. After 20 years of nasty wood like oak, we bought a 30 ton splitter powered by an 8 hp few years ago. This thing will crush the wood if it won't split. There is no such thing as an "unsplitable" piece of wood. I'm too old for splitting wedges, monster mauls and the rest. Have fun wacking if you are young or store some gas if you're getting over the hill like me.

Why split the wood? FWIW, being more than a little lazy, this year I bought an inexpensive 14" electric chainsaw to cut the 16-22 inch pieces of wood in half. I also made a stand of 2x4 X frames of to hold the wood while we cut it. The whole proceedure is fast and easy.

Much better for our new high efficiency stove which doesn't need nearly as much wood and we now have much better control of the stoves flue temperature.

Before someone tells me to get a gasoline chain saw, I have one of those also and will use it if/when the power is not available. Until then, the electric one is fast enough and much simpler for this task.
