Oprah Poll Update

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Question: How much are you worried about Y2K?

Item Votes

Very 36.25%

Not at all 34.28%

Somewhat 29.46%

Lump "very" and "somewhat together and the results would be:

Worried: 65.71%

Not worried: 29.46%

Or, how about this question:

Do you think Oprahs Y2K program was:

Biased beyond all belief.

Fair reporting presenting experts on both sides of the argument.

Also, the "experts" stated that there are "80" days left until the rollover. That means that this was produced the end of September. I guess that's why all of the "experts" flying plans between 12/31 and 01/01 were still intact.

Uncle Bob,

As I recall, Sep 22nd was the 100-day mark, so if they filmed this at T-80 days, that's sometime in mid-October. This was about the time that the government was announcing its "99% complete" status, and sometime before Koskinen and Garvey discovered, to their shock and dismay, that they couldn't find any scheduled flights for New Year's Eve. It was also before the State Department announced that non- critical embassy staffers in Russia would be allowed to come home, which perhaps Wolf Blitzer might have asked about...

Realistically, though, one couldn't expect the various gov't spokesmen to say anything substantially different today (Nov 29th) than they did back in mid-October. The great travesty of justice committed by Ms. Oprah was not providing the "balance" of some responsible spokesmen for the other side. If she didn't like Karen Anderson or Michael Hyatt, she could have gotten Ed Yardeni or Bob Alloway or any number of other reasonably conservative commentators who would NOT have panicked her audience, but who might have provided some food for thought.

One more opportunity down the drain, though I can't say that it surprise me...

67% of typical Oprah viewers...
[snip--Colin that was uncalled for--Sysop]
...might try and stock up on food? Dear god. Returning to the serious issue, I have real doubts about those numbers. I mean, if Oprah says there isn't a problem, then how could there be (in the minds of her disciples)? I smell a zillion votes from zog... :)

Hey Colin, I resemble that picture (but I wear one piece swimsuits LOL). I watch Oprah and I've been a GI since March 1998. I also have worked tirelessly in my local Y2K organization. I emailed Oprah and posted to her board - SHAME ON YOU Oprah. It's too bad that she misled folks, because so many people listen to her. Thank goodness I'm ready and have done as much as almost anyone to get my community ready too (didn't work too well, I might add). Everyone - be well and be ready!

I sent her an e-mail and got the typical "we received your e-mail but due to the volume of e-mails we receive......., but we do read all e-mails." I put in my e-mail that if she really wanted the truth about Y2K to visit Ed Yourdon's TB2000 website." It's too late anyway for her to do or say anything due to programming timelines. However, it may not be too late for her to become a GI, she can have her maid do all the shopping.

Oprah no doubt has her stash of food, hasn't she put on some weight lately??
