DVD quality on CD-R with SVCD software from Philips for NT

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I am Starting this thread because I belive it is worth discussing.

Has anyone had any experance with the new standard SVCD. Philips has released a new SVCD authering and image creator for NT. With SVCD you will be able to get near DVD quality on a standard CD-R that will play in your newer DVD player. http://www.licensing.philips.com/newoptical/svcd/newsvcd.html

I plan to install NT on mt computer within the nex few days. after than i will be able to tell more about creating SVCD's.

If SVCD creating is going to be available for the home user, then maby we will need a new catagory for all the new questions that will arise from using the new philips software

The next thing that has to be addressed here is how and where to get set-tops that will recognize and play these SVCDs. If the created SVCDs will just be used for PC playback, I see little point.

Actualy you are wrong in saying that SVCD will only be for the PC. If you would take the time and read some of the .pdf docs on the philips site:

http://www.licensing.philips.com/newoptical/svcd/newsvcd.html

In the first .pdf it talks about SVCD and states "It is a disk format that will play on new DVD players and PC's" and "Plays on dedicated Super Video-CD players and DVD players". Quote about far-east with > 8 MIN pices since end of 1998 "all new DVD players have Super Video CD playback". Quote about Western World "New DVD players will soon (Q3, 1999)have Super Video CD plaback including CD-R capability". Well I don't know about you, but I got one of thoes newer dvd players. A RAITE DVD PLAYER, The AVPhile 711, ( http://www.raite.com.tw/edefault.htm ) and I have no problem with CD- r or CD-RW VCD's playing on this DVD player. It says on the front panel DVD/VCD/CD Player. In its digital display it has SUPER VCD. Ok but with SVCD players being shiped, and all new DVD players that support it, why not have support group here for it as well? SVCD is an enhancement to the "WhiteBook" standard and should be conciderd in any discution about VCD.

By the way my RAITE DVD PLAYER, The AVPhile 711, ( http://www.raite.com.tw/edefault.htm ) only cost $140 USD plus shipping from an after market dealer.

Rob, Supposedly the SVCD compatibilty is NOT a US feature of most DVD players. SVCD is the invention of the Chinese to combat the licensing fees of DVD, and is mainly used only in China (See CCube's website, IIRC.). Your player may have those features, but my understanding is that most do not. Alos, please do share where you bought this player. I've seen the same unit at Comp USA for roughly $200. Thanks!

Steve

Got me a Super VCD by Shinco while I was in China. Plays mp3's and has a 3 disc carosel. Anyone got any good resources for creating SVCD's please drop me a line

Philips charges $500 per license for its SVCD authoring Toolset, Not just this, you also need CDRWin from GoldenHawk to burn it into CD-R Disc. Quite expensive for individual use.

Anybody who wants to learn how to create SVCD's should go to www.doom9.net/ and read thier guides etc, all the software is there to download as well.
