WKRP??

I thought that show was over years ago!!

-- (what@the.hell), November 29, 1999.

I DID do the right thing, and subscribed, by the way!... last month. A privilege to be pulling my own weight, though there''s just days to go. Still looking forward to my LED flashlight kit.

DID YOU CATCH THE LINE ON HOW THEY ARE USING THE OPRAH SHOW TO "SPREAD THEIR MESSAGE"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOW WE KNOW WHY SHE MADE HER DECISIONS.

Don't you people ever sleep? I put it up about midnight EST and at 6:45 EST, there you are. What is it, are you getting ready to take the midnight watch at the "compound"?

...it was a cold November night, the FN/FAL battle rifle was leaning against the log,

I put down the night vision scope (Russian 2nd generation), and glanced up, Orion was blazing across the cold sky and Saturn chased Jupiter to the west. The beep on the Palm Pilot told me to check mail, <<<< WRP 132 <<<< the message scrolled across the display...

(note to Squirrel Hunter, check the comments near the end of WRP132, I ran out of parts for the LED kits, more should be in soon. I appologize for the wait.)

Must-read status/contingency reports from Marriott, New York City Emergency Management, and the U.S. Air Force. NYC is especially interesting--one agency requested thousands of electric blankets for any problems during the rollover. . .

-- More (than@3days.here), November 29, 1999.

Chuckling softly to myself in the dim pre-dawn hours. Cory, you jes bring that FN and your Rushkie optiks on out here to camp Pinkrock, you already know the drill. And I was wondering if you could reprogram this Trace 4024 to shoot out about 47,000 volts?

Off to read the WRP, hot off the press...

countindown...32 days...

Godspeed,

Did you catch this?

COL Tim Christenson, Deputy Director Y2K Operations, Dept. of Defense:

"The White House has decided that there will not be any expectation of disastrous consequences, so there will be no fast response [[by DoD??]]."

Huh?

Still reading... but I notice in the report about NYC they identified 900 "mission critical" systems in Jan. '99 (or was it '98?), weeded those to 300 because some were not really "M.C.", those were too many, so they DECIDED to focus on 75 systems related to public safety and payments. Then in September they were told to weed them down to 25 systems.

Is it just me, or does this not hint that virtually NOTHING is finished?

Shelters requesting 39,000 electric blankets.

ROTFLMAO!

Thank you Critter, Dracon and Cory for your excellent reports on the WDC Nov. meeting.

It's good to see Marriot is on top of things, as they run many nursing homes and assisted living facilities. At least some yuppies' grand-parents will be looked after.

As for DoD and NYC, well...they're attitudes are showing. The DoD enticipates trouble from the millitias and "doomers", and NYC's Hugues didn't want the job in the first place.

I wonder how much better things would be if the world was run by Inas and Paulas...

Thanks Cory.

Exactly.

This is manipulation of the numbers in a desperate fashion to at least finish part of the project. If those systems first deemed mission critical are then suddenly made less than critical then why do they exist in the first place?

I'm constantly amazed at how little has actually changed over the course of this year. I still have the same questions and I'm still trying to get a grasp on the truth. And the realist inside me keeps saying, "no one knows". Well, looking at this from the cheap seats, with less than 32 days until rollover I'm not feeling too comfortable.

The DOD comment is particularly biting: "By order of the White House, there will be no serious disruptions."

Yeah right. In the service, we used to laugh at statements like that all the time. "By order of the commander, (insert oxymoronic dirtective here)." Kinda like the old "Floggings will continue until the crew's morale is improved."

The White House can direct that there WILL BE no disruptions until they're blue in the face. Do you think there's a chance in Hell that mere words will change the occurence of Y2K problems or not?

This is a priceless insight inro how somebody in the White House sees Y2K. Boy is reality gonna bite that person.

Anyone care to take a crack at John Hughes remark

"But Montgomery County asked 'can you house 600 prisoners?' We referred them to the recruiting command. (L) [[Note: there were news reports a few days earlier about British Army proposals to recruit from prisons.]]"

Kills 2 birds with one stone?

-- flora (***@__._), November 29, 1999.

Oopsie - it was by Col. Christensen.

-- a flushing flora (***@__._), November 29, 1999.

Wildweasle - I think the President's decree that there would be no Y2K problems comes under the "If a tree falls in a forest..." catagory. Why do you think they have this big "communications" center that will NOT be allowing any press in?

Practice up on your smoke signals and Morse code.
