Wouldn't it be better to make wood alcohol? The raw materials should be cheaper, and I'd think there'd be less risk from the revenooers.

Wood alcohol is rather poisonous, as well as its fumes. Use of methanol as a fuel could possily poison someone in an enclosed place, but the caron monoxide and dioxide could also. Aditionally if you are actually manufacturing drink grade alcohol it has a multitude of uses. It might be wise to denature much of the product to keep it from causing further social upheaval.

One source I saw on another board today was Kurt Saxton's page on alcohol fuel production at http://www.kurtsaxon.com/select03.html

Wood alcohol?where's the fun in that?

I long ago (almost 3 yrs ago) planned on making ethanol -- will use it for general anesthesia, if things come to that. Kurt Saxon has some good pages on stills, but do a search -- there's lots of others. Also contact Lindsay Books -- they may still have some stuff on stills.

Being from NC. I have the natural instinct to refine the art of my forefathers. While not caring to go into details that might disturb the forces that be. I can give a valuable tip. The reason the spirits are of better quality in the mountians, than in the flatlands is this. As most of you learned in school the boiling temperatures are reduced at higher elevations. This is because of the drop in atmospheric pressure. This can be simulated with vacuum distillation. Therefore reducing the risk of scorching the mash. The reduction in temperature will save in energy used, and avoid detection by those seeking to curtail your efforts, and steal your valuable fuel. This also gives a smoother, and in case you have to siphon to fill your tank, a better tasting fuel!!!. I have heard of some cats making their fuel in this way using a (glass lined) hot water heater set at 180 deg.FH.,but the catalst rod(in some heaters) must be removed. I hope this info.helps someone save energy, and reduce pollution. Shinserely(hic) The Happy,Happy Hoarder.
