Why will it cost me more?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : I-695 Thirty Dollar License Tab Initiative : One Thread

Could you please tell me why we were not informed that if our excise tax for tabs in 99 was $17 I will now have to pay $30 for them in 2000? On my sons 91 Tempo our tax goes up $8 on my 87 CRX I will be paying $13 more. I have spoken to several people who like me own older cars due to financial situations and all of our tabs will be going up next year thanks to I-695. Also why weren't the voters informed that if school lunches, ASB cards, Drivers Ed, towel fees etc. will have to be put on a ballot if they need to be raised? The schools are government agencies so they are required now to ask the voters for permission to raise fees that may be a result of milk or gas price increases. Sure $30 for licenses sounds good but that is only what the excise tax is, we still have to pay other fees +$30. Stick it to the middle and lower class again. By the way after fully researching this Initiative, I voted no because of it not being just a flat $30 license fee. Please let me know why I will have to now pay more. By the way, I'm a single mom, through no choice of my own, it was my ex's choice to date while married and raising two teenagers, so don't say I am a part of the burden on the system, every penny counts. I have always worked, sometimes 4 jobs, to raise my kids and keep going and have never been on assistance of any kind. I guess you could say I'm part of the working poor who now will be paying more money for the privledge of driving to work. I really look forward to hearing from you.

You were not informed???? How could you have driven by hundreds of yard and street signs supporting I-695 and not seen "$30 TABS"? Virtually every news article on all media made the $30 the highlight of their reports. If voters were forced to pay $30, the world would be Chicken Little City. Bottom line: It was in all the papers. As far as the $30 figure, it was to eliminate only the confiscatory EXCISE tax portion of the charges. This was something I would have thought you would have found when you did your research. I-695 was simply an initiative dealing with ONE THING: Taxpayer control of certain tax levels, giving those taxpayers some tools to accomplish the long-overdue task. Hope your situation improves soon.

Laurie,

Did you read your voters pamphlet? I submit to you that you WERE informed that if your excise tax for tabs in 99 was $17 you will now have to pay $30 for them in 2000. Perhaps you meant to state something else? Through no fault of the voters, it was your ex's choice to date while married and raising two teenagers. Please place the blame where it belongs. If you cannot afford the $13 dollars, then you are probably eligible for assistance of some sort. I, for one, have no problem with you obtaining that assistance if you truly need it.

Laurie, You are a slick one (or so you think) Trying to stir up controversy when you never supported 695 in the first place. And claiming to have fully researcehd the initiative.

Horse puckey!!. I read all the nit-picky little laws that I-695 strove to do away with. ALL of them.

What was your research??? Listening to the quacking ducks on King 5 news??? If you are so naive then I feel really sorry for your kids. They deswerve a home where they can get a good education and guidance by someone who has a little common sense. your commentary here:

"Also why weren't the voters informed that if school lunches, ASB cards, Drivers Ed, towel fees etc. will have to be put on a ballot if they need to be raised? The schools are government agencies so they are required now to ask the voters for permission to raise fees that may be a result of milk or gas price increases."

The answer is: Because it is NOT the truth. Are you completely deluded by your protecting government or are you the one attempting to delude everyone else??

I also have suspicions about your tab fees. I have an 86 Nissan Sentra and the fees this year were $70.00 after the $30.00 reduction..

Life is hard for everybody lady. We just tried to make it a little easier for ungrateful whiners like you

Now that I think about it, could Laurie afford these hypothetical increases? If she can't afford a (suspicious) $13 increase in her tabs, then she could not afford these hypothetical increases either.

Older cars should be regulated off the roads due to their environmental damage. Shame for driving such old vehicles.

I don't see "ungrateful whiners" as violating the ROE. People don't want to be called whiners, best stategy IMHO is to whine less.
