According to my English Doctorite, Poe is has not been relieved of the Oedipus Effect which Frued described as being erotically in love with one's mother...In my opinion, Poe could not get over the loss of his wife, or perhaps his failure towards her as a husband which may have eventually caused her death...

A commonality seems to be groteque and arabesque machinations leading to death....Revenge often a key theme....Poe's obsession appears to be vengeance coupled with recapture of love and approval....
