Energy Sources

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

My own electric utility, Conectiv, has been sending out more information lately on their Y2k readiness. Along with the last bill came a statement of the types of plants they use to supply energy.

Coal = 48.65%

Nuclear = 35.59%

Gas = 6.26%

Oil = 3.01%

Hydro = .3% (that's 3/10th %. Wish it was more, Malcolm)

Renewable energy = 6.19% The catagory within this area is Solid Waste. They can produce electric energy from solid waste, and it's the only form of renewable energy they have. In a crude way that is good news, since they have been putting out so much BS it now appears that they have developed a way to turn that into electricity. Good for them.

What struck my interest was that almost 50% is coal dependent so those mile long coal trains better keep arriving every day. Also, just over 35% is from nukes, so there better not be any issues in that area either. Almost 85% is from just these two sources. Sigh. The gas and oil plants together are less than 10%. Sigh. In fact, they are now producing more than twice as much electric from their BS plants as from oil.
