Y2K AWARENESS - Urgent! Please read!

11/24/99

I am a resident of this Neighborhood. This vital information concerns the potential impact of the Y2K Millennium Bug . Because I truly care for my neighbors, I want to share a summary of the latest evidence that points to disruptions in our infrastructure. Many of us used to be skeptical of this problem, but no more after much research.

I am convinced that we have been misled by our government and media . It will not be the end of the world, but neither will it be a bump on the road. 65 Y2K experts just wrote Fed chairman Alan Greenspan an open letter disputing his overconfidence that there will be little impact. The networks are not airing our views. Y2K's domino effects and financial repercussions may be felt for 12 months or longer. This is no joke or hype!

As of November 1999, the media has not told you the following facts: (space does not permit documentation).

  • According to inside sources, twenty five or more U.S. nuclear power plants may not be not compliant (fixed and tested), contrary to official claims of 100%. The recent nuclear accident in South Korea was Y2K related. There have been other cover-ups! All plants are required to store 7 days of diesel fuel for their backup generators, but the CEO of a well-respected software firm with has said that he expects over 4 weeks of power outages. Without power, the plants won't have enough water to cool the rods. A full-page ad appeared on the New York Times on October 22 headlined "Y2K and the world's nuclear systems: The deadliest gamble in history. " Helen Caldicott predicts "at least 2 or 3 meltdowns in the Northern Hemisphere."
  • The governor of Georgia was notified that his state would have no power for at least 3 weeks. Yet, the governor told the people to prepare for only 3 days of food & water! Koskinen recently told industry leaders to prepare for 3 weeks of outage. . Inside source revealed that Y2K testing triggered the big PG & E blackout several months ago in San Francisco. The NERC's last report to the DOE revealed that "75% of the power utilities do not routinely share readiness information with the public." 86% of small to medium chemical plants is not compliant.
  • Unisys predicted recently that 8 million computers would have glitches in January 2000.
  • The July, 1999 GAO Report on status of San Francisco & San Jose: water/wastewater treatment, emergency services, telecommunications, transportation, etc. all not ready.
  • The Center for Y2K & society surveyed 55 U.S. cities in 28 states and stated on 11-15 that "a majority of communities across the country, regardless of size, are under-prepared for Y2K." Dallas and Boston, both claiming Y2K ready, got a C and D grade respectively! New York and Oakland, CA. supposed to be a "model" city in preparation both got a C! A Navy website reveals that 44 major cities will have total failure. Most positive reports are self-reporting.
  • The latest report shows over 50% of our biggest companies are not compliant; only 49% of the counties have any contingency plan.
  • The urban warrior training exercises by the Marines in 120 cities (including D.C., San Jose, L.A., and Seattle . . .) were for potential Y2K violence and combating terrorism. They are preparing for martial law. This has been verified by different people in the armed services. Rent the movie "Siege" by Bruce Willis. The NBC movie on Y2K was a sorry, mild production.
  • If there is any looting, the President or governor(s) may declare a state of emergency & will call the mayors of these cities & they may shut down all highways & bridges. We may lose most of our freedom. We might be forced to be relocating to refugee camps. Their actions do speak louder than words.
  • The cities & towns outside these 120 big cities may not receive much federal help, because they do not have enough manpower.
  • The government has been stock piling food & grains for a few years, but they tell us only to prepare for 3 days. Mr. Clinton said that he does not plan to prepare, but a few days prior to that Brainstorm 2000 held the largest Y2K conference. It was attended by the White House, agencies, utilities, big corporations reps. The speakers agreed that there will be "substantial disruptions through all of 2000 nationally and internationally." Someone is not telling the truth!
  • There is only a 3-day food supply in the markets. The railroads & trucking industry are not ready. The food & farm industries are highly computerized. Telecommunications is behind. All companies Y2K press releases are couched carefully by lawyers.
  • About 80% of the companies have already experienced glitches. There are 50 billion embedded chips, most have not been checked. They are afraid their stock price will plunge like IBM.
  • 50% of our ports may not be Y2K compliant. The big oil-producing countries are expected to have serious problems. Oil supply is the life of our nation. Only 15% of the developing nations have done any repair. Britain is thinking of 5-days banking holiday January 3, 2000.
  • If there is no power, there will be no gas, safe water, and heat. The domino effect has begun.
  • You need to be self-sufficient. When price is low & supply is plenteous, stockpiling is not hoarding. Do not wait till December to shop. You might not find the food, bottled water etc
  • FDA admits thousands of medical equipment are still at risk. Most hospitals do not plan to test their repair.
  • Government: federal, state & many local have cooked the numbers, claiming 80-99% Y2K ready. What they usually mean is they will have staff ready to fix any problem that may appear.
  • 18. Oil is the lifeblood of modern nations. Most experts expert a drastic reduction of imported oil. The 2 largest U.S. oil pipeline companies plans to shut their pipe for 9-20 hours. Another 25% of pipeline companies plan to do likewise! Once shut down, oil may coagulates in cold weather. A Nov. Zogby poll showed that 77% of Americans are preparing for Y2K, are you? Great summary, only it's way to late to try to wake anyone up. You may as well hand out invitations to come and eat all my preps, as that is what your neighbors will want to do. Like GN says, "they won't prepare, but they'll remember."

Let's hope they don't show up at your door with a rope wanting to lynch the hoarder, and take all your goodies.

I have been so busy preparing that I have not had time to go around my neghbourhood. But thanks for that reminder. Mine is not the best of area, if there's a blackout, there may be chaos or worse. You got some good informaton there. I think I may use most of it but add my own appeal and email address. I won't want to use my physical address.

I would guess most of you live in a neighborhood.

I would guess most of you have preppped-heat--food--water- protection.

I would guess most of your neighbors have not and will not.

I would guess that if power or water or food goes away for two weeks.......you will be alone in your neigborhood with provisions.

Now at this point you've got to ask yourself, "do you feel lucky? Well, do you punk??

The problema is how long-how much! Don't know. Oops told my neighbors Im Mr. or Mrs. conscientous---The infamous Gary north I believe coined the phrase.

"They won't prepare, but they will remember". I don't know if or when or whatever, I just know I don't want to prepare and then be fighting off my wonderful (somnombulistic) neighbors.

You made my day! I have been quite discouraged lately because many friends do not listen to my plea. I have told scores of them, but I have yet to go to all my neighbors on my block, let alone my neighborhood. Well, you have inspired me to give it all I got. I don't think it is too late, because a lot of people still don't know the facts you listed in your flyer. And even if only 10%believe and prepare, that's still saving lives. I'll encourage my church friends to at least go to their block and drop off a flyer on the porch. Thanks

Good summary. Here's what I just prepared for distribution to neighbors. This will go inside the Calif. Office of Emergency Services brochure. On the reverse side of my front page will be "A Month in a Box," which tells what to buy at the store to feed one adult for one month and it fits into a computer box. The "Box" list is available at my website .

I chose this "format" because just a couple facts hit quick and hard, and a lot of people will get turned off by "too much reading."

I've waffled about this for some time. "They won't prepare butthey will remember." But unless you live five miles from nearest neighbor with no paved road coming to your place, well, you have to be willing to cover your windows with plywood, don't use the woodstove during the day, and spray odor neutralizer so folks won't smell your food cooking.

I'd done a bunch of public meetings on Y2K during 1998, but had only talked to a couple neighbors, who thought I was a nut. I live in a cul-de-sac. I would guess one other neighbor, maybe, has any awareness, but I don't know. If any other neighbors would be moved to buy a month in a box, or two weeks like the sheriff, well, maybe that might make a big difference. Here's my flier:

SPEAKING OF Y2K, DID YOU KNOW.

Butte County Sheriff Scott Mackenzie has stockpiled a minimum of two weeks of food for some 450 jail inmates, and all 231 sheriffs employees and their families? This was a front-page story in the Chico Enterprise-Record, July 30, 1999.

Mackenzie is quoted: We dont think this (the Y2K scare) will be more than a bump in the road, but we must prepare for the worst.

In the Fall of 1998, the California Department of Forestry (CDF) issued its employees a Y2K Quick Facts brochure. This brochure advised to store enough supplies to last two months. (CDFs original emphasis.)

Mary Ellen Hanley, the Year 2000 Program Manager for Washington, D.C. was interviewed on 60 Minutes, May 1999. Asked if she the city- was preparing contingency plans for a loss of power she replied, Yes. For how long? Were looking, roughly, at what we would consider national averages, one to two weeks. [my emphasis]

Georgia Representative George Grindley, Jr., chair of Georgias Task Force 2000, relates that John Koskinen, the White Houses Y2K Czar, told the CIO (Chief Information Officer) of Georgias state systems to ensure their contingency plans addressed three weeks without electric power.

Why hasnt the public been told any of this? Because, at the highest levels of government, the game plan was to protect the economy the banking system, the stock market- by selling the idea that Y2K would be no big deal.

Advocating public preparedness might have resulted in economic dislocations: bank runs, a stock market collapse.

Consequently, not a single government official, at any level, emerged to lead the general public to Sheriff Mackenzies goal. In Butte County, what County Supervisor, mayor or other municipal official called a press release to urge the public to follow Mackenzies example? Not a one.

Are you ready for a one to three week power outage? Will you be one of the sheeple, or will you follow the Sheriffs example, just in case?
