My 83 year old Dad told me that January Social Security payments will be paid at the end of December 1999. Payments are usually made on the 3rd of each month. Not a good sign!!

That's right !! AND . I asked the bank where mine is on automatic deposit and ' they said ' I could drawn on same by the 31st Dec. '99. Don't think I won't . Keep only the minimum needed to keep account open . LOL Eagle

A local bank in my area, Wood and Huston, has been running radio ads saying, 'Don't worry about the y2k bug -- if Washington has any problem getting your Social Security check out, we will give you a non-interest loan for the same amount as your SS direct deposit check'. Though they don't say it, it sounds like a one-time arrangement (i.e. January?).
None of the other local banks have made similar promises.

That sounds like an ad designed to make you think the bank is safer than Social Security.

Those ads have been appearing here for the last couple of months. I think they are offering that little loan for just one month, also.
Our Christmas Parade was this past Sunday. We are very small town. The local bank entered a float and on the back they included the saying "We're OK with Y2k". Looked kind of odd and out of place.
Just wondering exactly what does "We're OK with Y2k" mean.

January Soc Sec checks are customarily paid at the end of December. This is not a Y2K issue- just SOP. There are no Jan payments and checks resume Feb 3. This happens every year.

I beg to differ with you. This is a first.
