Why is Poe a cultural icon?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Work of Edgar Allan Poe : One Thread

I have done a ton of research over Poe, and I've come up with several prospective thesis, but they are all either too broad, or too narrow...I need possible ideas or thesis statements, on what was Poe's significant impact on culture, why is he an icon? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I THINK THAT E.A. POE IS A CULTURAL ICON BECUASE HE REPRESENTS THE DARKER SIDE OF OUR SOCIETY. HE NEVER WROTE ABOUT HAPPY TOPICS BUT CHOSE TO FOCUS ON THE DEPRESSING, MORBID, GOTHIC ONES. I THINK THAT PEOPLE OF ALL AGES CAN RELATE TO HIS WRITING, EVEN NOW, AND THEREFORE HE HAS BECOME A LITERARY god IN HIS OWN RIGHT!
