ADMIN: Password requests and rollover coverage

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

A couple of 'housekeeping' items for the upcoming few weeks...
  1. Energyland.net will not be honoring requests for Y2k forum passwords between Dec. 15, 1999 and January 5, 2000. This is to ensure that we are able to maintain the security and operational integrity of the forum during this anticipated high traffic period, and to ensure that forum "regulars" will be able to access the forum. So, if you know of anyone that would like access to the forum but doesn't currently have a password, please let them know.

  2. As of right now, energyland.net is planning to provide continual rollover coverage from 12/29/1999 to 1/4/2000. We are currently negotiating a live news feed, as well as planning to provide our own insight and analysis based on input from our global network of contacts. More info will be forthcoming as our plans develop.

If you have any suggestions or comments with respect to what you would like to see covered during the Y2k transition, and how you'd like to see it covered, please drop us a line at info@energyland.net.

  3. If you are one of our offshore contributors, we'd like to be able to correspond with you before, during, and after the transition. If you'd like to particpate, again, drop us a line at info@energyland.net to express your interest.

One item which might be useful, either during rollover or before, would be a listing of shortwave frequencies - where one could receive Energyland information which might not be accessible in any other way.

I haven't yet had a chance to test our recently purchased digital AM/FM/SW (Radio Shack DX-398) receiver. I am a complete novice regarding shortwave. We did buy a Wordwide Shortwave Listening Guide, but I am not yet sure I would know how to use it. There must be many persons in that situation.

This may well be an "off-the-wall" or unworkable idea. If so, please disregard it, although I'll also email it to: info@energyland.net. I just thought it would be nice to have shortwave information regarding status reports of the ten or so NERC Regional Council grids, at least in the event of problems with any of them...

I'll be scanning the whole range, anyway, if we lose power here in Springfield, Illinois. Thank you!

Are there any other ham radio operators out there reading these posts? How about getting together on the air Dec 31 to monitor events during the transition? Do you know of any other "nets" already planned for this event? If you do I'd like to hear about it. I'm located in Iowa (in spite of the call sign) KK6QU.

With emergency power provisions hams are the best way to maintain communication (live reports)even after/if the power goes down.

Chuck, I'm a new licensee, specifically for this event -- or non-event -- which ever the case may be.

I've got four big deep-cycle marine batteries to keep the radio juiced. :-)
