Can the Canon CCDRAW format be easily converted to say TIFF or JPEG or can it only be read with Canon software

My understanding (I don't have the camera) is the CCDRW format is used merely to conserve space on the memory card without using a lossy format such as JPEG on the card, as most cameras do (and indeed, as the Canon itself does in a lesser-quality mode.)

You are correct that only Canon software will understand the CCDRW file as it gets transferred to the computer from the camera. But this is no limitation, as you are also correct that it can IMMEDIATELY converted to an industry-standard non-lossy format such as TIFF, via the same software.

From that point on, you are free to treat the image any way you wish, e.g. convert it to JPEG, etc.
