I realize the NBC movie, "Y2K", was full of straw men and basic silliness and had a nice happy ending, but in light of the fact that NBC is referring viewers to a handful of the more pessimistic sites leads me to believe that hey are at least trying to alert the public. For example, viewers are directed to Gary North's "Main Categories Page" which gives one of his more poignant summaries of the problem.

Viewers are also directed to y2knewswire's alarming "Circle of Dominoes" Engine page, which aptly summarizes the gist of Y2K with the following diagram:

Also, the nuclear meltdown scenario presented in the show (regardless of its technical accuracy) may well raise public consciousness to the point of accepting the "necessary evil" of the shutdown of nuclear power plants as a precaution.
