How do Maines rate for allergies compared to other cats?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Maine Coon Cats : One Thread

My daughter is allergic to cats, some much worse than others. She has grown up with Siamese and while they bother her, she adjusted somewhat while living at home. Now that she's in college and comes home occasionally, she is extremely allergic: itchy, red, swollen eyes, uncontrollable sneezing and running nose. She loves cats and wants one desperately. I know the Siamese breed seems to be especially bad. How are the Maine Coons for causing allergies? Anyone know? Or can compare with others? Thanks.

My husband and I both have slight cat allergies. We had a friend with a Siamese, and we both experienced watery eyes and runny noses after visiting him. We have never had any allergic reaction to our two Maine Coons, who often sleep in our bed. Might be a good idea for your daughter to visit a Maine coon cattery (one without other breeds of cats) to see how she responds.

My husband has many allergies, none of which are cat related, thank goodness. But the dander and the germs from the saliva the cat leaves on the coat as he grooms contributes to the problem. MC's love water. Bathing may help minimize some of the problem. In addition to visiting a cattery, you might try to get near a cat that has been recently bathed to see if there is any difference (breeders the day before a show would be a suggestion). There are also "dry shampoos" and wipes that can help as well. Good luck.
