Subject: Inexpensive Software Allows You to Download Entire Web Sites, Including the Pages They Link To

Link: http://www.tenmax.com/teleport/pro/home.htm

Comment: A friend of mine sent me a CD-ROM last week. I popped it into my CD-ROM tray and closed it. One minute later, my entire Web site as of the day before appeared on my screen. It looked just like my site. The internal links work. The external links work if I'm connected to the Web. It is lightning fast. It's perfect.

I am told that you can set the program to download the pages that the external links connect to. This is copyrighted material, but it's legal for personal use.

This means that you could make a copy of my Web site, or any Web site, and keep it in your computer or on a CD-ROM disk. New computers come with a CD-ROM maker. The disks cost 60 cents at Sam's Club.

Do you think that some crucial site in your life will go down next year? Copy it. Several survival sites should be on your disk. For sake of the historical record, I wish hundreds of you would copy my site and the documents it links to. Y2K reporting is mainly Web-based. It would be cost-prohibitive for even a team of professional researchers to recreate my site. Without the Web, it would be impossible.

Paper-based archives are not indexed well, and no library has all of the journals.

If you want to keep your favorite parts of the Web, buy this program.

Teleport Pro v1.29 for Windows 95/98/NT/2000

PC Magazine's Editors' Choice for offline browsers, Teleport Pro is an all-purpose high-speed tool for getting data from the Internet.

Launch up to ten simultaneous retrieval threads, access password-protected sites, filter files by size and type, search for keywords, and much more. The most fully-featured and robust webspider available, Teleport Pro handles today's more complex websites flawlessly.

Capable of reading HTML 4.0, CSS 2.0, and DHTML, Teleport is the only webspider that really finds all of the files on all of the sites. And with side image map exploration, automatic dial-up connecting, Java applet support, variable exploration depths, project scheduling, and relinking abilities, Teleport Pro is quite simply the best there is.

Teleport Pro can--

* Download all or part of a website to your computer, enabling you to browse the site directly from your hard disk at much greater speeds than if you were to browse the site online
* Create an exact duplicate, or mirror of a website, complete with subdirectory structure and all required files
* Search a website for files of a certain type and size
* Download a list of files at known addresses
* Explore every website linked from a central website
* Search a website for keywords
* Make a list of all pages and files on a website

No more waiting for slow pages to download. No more clicking on links for hours, only to find garbage at the end of your trail. Read on for a comprehensive list of features, or download a free evaluation version you can try out today!

We're on an iMac, no $$ left.

But you whizzards who have PCs -- check this out! Maybe it is the solution.

Somebody please make a duplicate of the Forum immediately. It is obvious the trolls will do anything/everything to destroy it.

Mac based too.

Ashton & Leska, why don't you flag Russ on this?

He's a PC'er.

Diane

From Russ:

"This looks really cool and might be the answer for the prep forum (TB2K too, of course). Thanks, will check out.

If this tool can reproduce a website thats stored in a database, then it's a killer app.

If it simply imports the web shell and html pages, then its not doing anything extraordinary.

I'll have to see it recreate this forum before I'm going to get too excited.

Critt

-- Anonymous, November 20, 1999

Instead of just bragging and teasing about your extraordinary capabilities, Critt, please get off your ass and get excited and save the Forum. Whatever software it takes, just do it, or help us figure out how to do it. Time is running out.

Test it out and tell us if it will work. Don't be a wet blanket unless you know. Either way, inform all of us quickly, succintly, factually.

Doesn't anybody realize time is ticking away, never to be retrieved? Are you all closet pollies who feel no sense of urgency?

Gawd if we had the computer skills we'd have saved the Forum by now. If you were our patient dying, screaming in pain, all organs failing, we wouldn't sit around debating or intellectually giving lip service to various pain meds. WE'D ACT AND RELIEVE YOU. Live up to your supposed expertise, computer folks.

Y2K is not the only design flaw.

-- Anonymous, November 20, 1999

A & L,

1) My capabilities that you refer to are really quite average. The things I do with Access and SQL are kid stuff compared to what my working friends create, for fun and for profit.

2) The reason I can't get excited about "saving the forum" is that I don't think the forum is in trouble.

3) OK. I'll bite. I'll do the download and see what it does with the forum.

4) You're right. Y2K is not the only design flaw. In fact, it's trivial compared to what I think is happening now and into the coming months.

5)Let me have administrative rights to delete, and I'll show you how healthy this forum is.

6)And, oh yeah, quit feeding the !@#!#@$!# trolls. Do not post to their threads. Do not start start threrads about them. Nada. Not even in this private space.

Ok, I'm on the case...

Love you guys,

Critt

-- Anonymous, November 20, 1999

Thanks, Critt.

Our blood pressure and temper is HIGH.

We do not feed the trolls OR start threads about them OR contribute to threads about them. UGH !!

We have repeatedly advocated clean excising of trolls for months. Evidence of our position throughout this Mod Forum.

The eMail round-robin today was necessary. After yesterday's Forum shredding, then seeing it start all over again -- we just don't have time for it.

Go to it with the software, Critt. Prove yourself.

Hmmmm...

I got the top level...

Now let's see if this puupy can get deep...

Hang on to yours butts.

OK, there seems to be a huge disconnect there. If Y2K is trivial compared to ??? happening now & into coming months, uh, isn't the Forum in imminent danger?

Isn't everything in grave danger then? Especially computer-based databases? Or are you saying the immediate future is bright and rosy with undreamed of prosperity and unlimited progress, with nary any bumps in the road?

How we wish that were the case! Speak and say if this is what you have concluded!

Stop the presses!!!

I seem to be getting the top level of all the Greensupn forums.

I'm stopping the transfer to explore what's going on...

Critt sent this to Diane, Ed, Chuck, Arnie, Brian, Patrick, Old Git, Robert, A&L, Michael, Kevin, Tom, Andy, Russ, Arlin, and Rick Cowles:

" Killer App!!! It works...

Sheesh. It works like a champ.

Ok, I've got some mix and match with the other Greenspun forums, so....

Bottomline is this. I'll download the Y2K forums tonight.

Email me if you want a zipped copy. If you need WinZip, tell me. Html is html, this ought to work for Mac users.

Ok, here's the deal...

I downloaded an evaluation copy.

I seems to work fine ( this is one fast movin, hungry spider).

Constraint #1 This spider goes a huntin wherever Greenspun's links leads it. That means I'm also getting the top level of all the other Q&A forums (maybe more than that, dunno)

Constraint #2 This spider knows its only showing off (remember, this is an evaluation copy)and quits hunting after 500 files.

Constraint #3 490 copied files = 17megs. If the math holds up I can only put about 43,000 files on what's left of my hard drive.

That being said, I ain't jumping through no more hoops this weekend.

Anywho....

We now know the forum can be downloaded and converted to html files. That means that creating a CD of the forum (which can be read by any browser)is problematic.

OK, now, just sit still there. Need to conserve energy, you know?

Aummmmm... Aummmmmm...

First I have to get a licensed copy of SpiderMaster (or whatever it's called). My wife, who guards the VISA card, still has me on a very short Y2K leash. (BD's seen her first hand. Don't mess with her.)I'll figure out something. Just give me a few days.

And keep your $100, A&L. This is too easy. Besides, you turned me on to a very useful tool I can use in my new job.

Going to sleep now,

Critt (who having just visited DC (Barnett) and Fort Meade is far more concerned about terrorist acts, cyber and otherwise, than the inevitable FOF disruptions from broken code.)

Everybody lately seems to be talking about Fort Meade. Gotta do a Sherlock search on it -- no idea what it is.

We still think Y2K is plenty to worry about.

Critt, you gotta put the second " in your HTML

Sort of like Y2K remediation. Confident programmers, strut their experience, blow it off, take a look around, pronounce it easy, fiddle with it, get involved in other things, think it's no biggie, they'll get around to it, minimize it. Meanwhile the clock ticks ever forward, and the task, the mission, is not accomplished.

No terrorists could ever inflict this type and amount of damage upon the world. It takes procrastination, bombastic over-confidence, greed, selfishness, stupidity, sloth, mockery, and disconnection from reality, conscience, morality, and God to precipitate the castastrophe the globe is about to enter. The enemy is right in front of your screen.

Check List

Test it out and tell us if it will work.
Did that, told ya it works.
Don't be a wet blanket unless you know.
I know it works. I know a few constraints. I'm going back to wet blanket mode.
Either way, inform all of us quickly, succintly, factually.
Quickly? Well, from pooh-poohing the original notice to the composing the "can't get there tonoight" thread was half a day. That's quick for me.

Succcinctly? I hate to write, but I did number the constraints.

Factually? Yes, and somewhat entertaining.
Since you sounded like you were dying, screaming in pain, all organs failing, , I didn't sit around debating or intellectually giving lip service to various work arounds. I acted.

Whether or not relief comes to you is your responsibility.

Which why I quit my salaried job at We have no problem with Critt personally, but he does exemplify the kernal of what we're coming across in the real world, only more so.

Nuff said. We can't get any clearer. Our intent by starting this thread was to alert any PC programmer mods to the possibility of software that could download and preserve the Forums. We still believe that the Forums (TB2K, Prep, Humpty) are invaluable historical archives giving a unique, comprehensive, rare glance at a Preview of a monumental Catastrophic Event.

We still care about Community Prep, sharing, helping each other with skill pooling, and trying to survive Y2K. It has been painful to see our ideals shredded, even by long-time members of the Forum, but it just drives home the point that too many individuals have lost sight of Divine Laws and a Correction eventually must come.

A&L,

I am absolutely clueless as to the source of your anger.

And, I've grown weary of the noise.

Please understand, I'm writing this from my $9.00 an hour job at UHaul. My net income doesn't quite cover my mortgage payment - my wife's work makes up the difference. What I'm saying here is that my limited time online working with Y2K comes at great sacrifice - just as everyone who chooses to stay with this work experiences.

As I am clueless to your present anger, you are clueless to who or what I am, where I've been, or where I believe I'm going.

Adios, amigos. As with Community Conversations earlier in the year, my talents are needed elsewhere.

Faith,

Critt

$39.95, price of above software

-- Anonymous, November 21, 1999

A&L -- what's clear from the foregoing is that you not only expect, but demand, that others understand this event -- and its implications -- just as you yourselves do, and that they respond in the same way.

This expectation is fantasy -- trust me on this. Individual differences exist. Circumstances alter cases.

More and more visible in society is a dismaying lack of respect for the individuality, common sense and moral integrity of others. Those who share this lack also tend to be inordinately judgmental of all but themselves. "My way is the right way, and it is the only right way," seems to be their motto.

Is this really where you want to be standing? It is not a distinguished company.

I can only hope Critt will not allow himself to be driven from this forum.

-- Anonymous, November 22, 1999

A&L,

I had intended on looking at that software as well. I believe I can back up onto my ORB drive and then burn a CD later. I have a friend with a great CD-R. I'll see what I can do, working as an alternate, Mac based source.

Uh,

Ashton & Leska... why the Critt pounce?

He tried the back-up and it worked.

*Sigh*

Thanks, Critt. (And Michael)

Ashton & Leska,

I've met a "real" PC wizard... one of the Silicon Valley types... who's gonna look at this for me. At work there is a worm drive and a PC.

The SBF may pruchase the s/w for another need. Will let you know. Might be able to have forum copies by the end of next week.

Hurrah, Diane! Please make it true, please follow through. Obviously the Forum is a uniquely valuable and rare historical archive of a Transition that will take the world by storm.

Helpful Hints for Using Teleport to Make Copies of Web Sites

Some sites are worth saving for the historical record. If you buy the inexpensive Teleport Pro software to make copies of this or any Web site, here are some hints. This user has made a complete copy of my site.
* * * * * * * * *

1. Use the wizard to select the website, enter the site's address by cutting and pasting the address from your browser. For some reason the wizard setup the process better.

2. Under Project the "Starting option" allows for "depth" of levels into the website.

3. If you select open the Properties menu box and select the Browsing/Mirroring and set the files to:

"Link a place on the disk" this will allow you to copy all of the files would be. This takes less space on you HDD

OR

"Link to the Internet address of the file"

-- Anonymous, December 03, 1999

I talked to him last night. He's downloaded the evaluation copy and will work with it this weekend. He's also the CTO for the SBF and we have a "critical" need for this to work.

;-D

Don'cha love it when the universe supports a project? I'll talk with him on Monday. (And I WILL follow-up on this Ashton & Leska).

BTW, the organization just got me a new PC to work with. (Oh joy!) I've been learning more about Windoze 98 and Access97 than I *ever* wanted to learn.

*Big Sigh*

(Love my Mac).

But... by next week he should have the new system internet compatible.

*Grin*

Diane

-- Anonymous, December 04, 1999

Happy synchronicity, Diane! :-)

They shoulda just bought you a new iMac. Only $999 and it ROARS !! Internet compatible in 5 minutes -- ya just gotta type in your handle & password & dial-up #. WheeeHeeeee! it's so easy.

Anywhoo ... got our fingers crossed. Supposedly this isn't so difficult on a Mac either -- backing up a Web Site on a CD -- but we don't have the equipment. Saving our pennies for batteries now -- our last-minute shopping item. Want 'em fresh!

The very best of good fortune to all of you who are working to literally save the Forum. IT IS WORTH IT !! And time is short ...

-- Anonymous, December 04, 1999

Quick Update.

The CTO passed the product (says it looks great... best he'd seen). I've downloaded the demo to the company's PC (the one I use) and we'll activate it by purchasing the product on Thursday. Then I get to figure out how to use it with the worm drive. (He'll help... when he's able).

Diane

-- Anonymous, December 09, 1999

Another update:

We have the full product which apparently has a limit of 60,000 different URL's it can handle. I'll be reading the help instructions later this week, need to purchase some blank worm CD then... hopefully... away we go.

Any Sysop who wants to spend some time re-catagorizing some of the key "Uncatagorized" threads this week... well.... that would be helpful.
