"I don't want to think about it!"

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

was the response I just got from one of my co-workers. She asked me if I was ready for the Thanksgiving holiday. I responded that I was ready not only for Thanksgiving, but Christmas, New Year's Eve, and y2k as well. She laughed and said it was just a bunch of hype and that I didn't believe that crap, did I?

I gave her a 45 second "infoburst" on the domino effect, IRS and Medicaid. Mentioned that if it came to writing checks by hand, it wasn't going to work. Told her how it just came out that the IRS still didn't have an accurate count of their systems, let alone have all the remediation done. I asked her if there are problems with the IRS collecting funds, how would the holders of Treasury bonds get paid? (Not to mention paying everyone else) Since we work for an investment bank, this one sank in. She walked away with one of those deer-in-the-headlights look, making her comment.

A new GI, or will she forget it all because it's too scary to think about?

Too little, too late. Forget about educating people. Anyone still clueless at 42 days is just asking to be Darwin-ed. "Deer-in-the-headlights" is a pretty fair assessment.

workin,

It's possible your co-worker will dig into the facts objectively and reach the truth: Nothing will happen at the roll-over. That would make her a true "GI," now wouldn't it?

Patient Regards,
Andy Ray

I just moved an hour north of the city. Should have done this sooner. The bus ride is long, but the seats are comfy, I do a lot of reading. It's worth it to be in a safer place. Sharing a house with two others. They're somewhat GI and plan to be away for the rollover. They know I'm a GI, but have NO idea the extent of the preps.

This being California the landlady wanted to "meditate on my aura" rather than run a credit check. Boy would she be surprised if she checked my (locked) closet...

IS IT EVER TOO LATE TO HELP SOMEONE? ...........I THINK NOT. REMEMBER SOME PEOPLE TRUELY DO NOT KNOW...AND IF I DID NOT HAVE THE INTERNET I DO NOT KNOW IF I WOULD BE AS WELL INFORMED.... AND I WOULD HAVE LOVED SOMEONE TO EXPLAIN IT TO ME SO I COULD BE PREPARED AND HELP MY OWN FAMILY

JUST A THOUGHT ANDIE

"Nothing will happen at the roll-over."

Nothing? Gee, is that why the Red Cross, Koskinem, IBM and countless others are warning people to prepare?

Open your eyes!

Tick... Tock... <:00=

Andy-

She and I are both adults and can discuss y2k as such. I gave her my opinion, she gave me hers. I force nothing upon her and vice versa. Her decision is her own, and as such I will respect that.

Andy Ray....

ANYONE that says they KNOW what will happen at rollover is either LYING, or seriously misinformed.

Which one are YOU?

If there is no general panic, there is still an opportunity for a few more families to build emergency preparation caches. There are still baygen radios, rice, beans, tinfoil, batteries, seeds, oil lamps, toilet paper, and other essential preparations freely available. There is still time for many small businesses to obtain replacements or upgrades for defective equipment and software. Winter gardens can still be planted (instead of lawn). Gun shops still have weapons and ammo avialable. And I still have a bunker for rent for the rollover...for any corporation that needs one (at a price, of course). [grin]

Andy, Darwin is waiting for assholes like you.

Can honestly say I don't know what's right or wrong anymore - things have gotten a little confused. Was very certain many more would have seen things coming and it wouldn't come down to just a few. The stress, anxiety and anger is very apparent and will probably just get worse. Guess you have to let your conscience be your guide and will still probably screw up. Know I open my mouth more than I should but hard not to.

Got into a discussion w/one my doctors and subject came up. He would like place to stay if things get out of hand, he'd be right in the middle. Offered him at most a piece of floor, figured I'd kick out a relative to have a doctor staying (just kidding -- maybe).

While I personally gave up telling people about Y2K months ago, I do know of a man who mentions it still to everyone he mets. He managed a few weeks ago to get one guy doing work at his house to GI. I envy this man,..he saved a life in my eyes, and I consider him much braver than I could ever be. If you can take the funny looks, the mocking, the downright cruelness and keep on trying to talk to new people about this, you have my utmost respect.

Andy doesn't even know what is the precise meaning of "G.I.". Boy, talk about being uninformed about Y2K. I guess we can definitely put him/her in the RDGI category, not that there was much doubt about it anyway...
