Is county's work force King-size?

by Brier Dudley Seattle Times staff reporter King County's empire is shrinking, but the number of county employees keeps growing despite Initiative 695.

Since 1996, the population in unincorporated areas governed by the county fell nearly 18 percent as jurisdiction was taken over by new cities or growing suburbs.

Meanwhile, the number of county employees grew 12 percent and could grow an additional 2 percent next year under the 2000 budget proposed by County Executive Ron Sims.

Some county leaders defend the job growth, saying the employees are providing valuable public services, but others believe it's time to start cutting back.

This weekend, the Metropolitan King County Council will consider several cuts in its administration and in Sims' office, but it remains to be seen whether total county employment will fall below 1999 levels.

Since 1996, the county's work force has grown from 11,781 to 13,216, and Sims proposed boosting it to 13,523 next year.

That works out to one county employee for every 127 people in the county, and one for every 29 people in the unincorporated areas - not counting the proposed increase.

FOR THOSE NOT GOOD AT LONG DIVISION: 1 employee per 127 people = 0.8% 1 employee/29 people = 3.4%

Nuff said!
