a camera for auction pictures

I am suppose to be helping my retired parents choose a digicam for $500 or less. Help! I have been studing everything I can find on the net and the more I learn the more confused I am. They will use the camera specifically for showing antiques/collectibles on web auction sites. I understand that you dont need an expensive camera for this, but I dont understand why some auction pictures are so terrible and others are so great. Can anyone tell me why a picture can lose quality when its posted to the web? Will you get a better picture if you shoot the orginal at high resolution then make file smaller to post to web, or should you shoot the photo at standard resolution? Any suggestions on a camera that will take quality indoor photos that will look good once posted to web and be relatively simple for an elderly person to use?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
