ear wax or ear mites

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Maine Coon Cats : One Thread

Three weeks ago I adopted two MCs; neutered males, raised together, about 8 & 9 years old. Wonderful cats, quite true to breed apparently.

They've both got a few blobs of dark wax in their ears, and one of them scratches one of his ears though not very often. Neither acts like he's fretting about his ears, but these are fairly calm cats.

My question is -- Are some blobs of dark ear wax normal for MCs, or is that always a sign of mites? I don't want to rush to the vet with these guys because they're still settling in. They weren't at the adoption group very long, but I noticed that the cages aren't always thoroughly sanitized between residents.

Thanks.

I am wondering the same thing. The other night, my female MC was scratching her ear and some dark chunks came out of her ear. This also happened with my male MC a month or so ago. I don't believe it is ear mites, possibly just ear wax. If someone knows for sure, I would like to know as well.
