Deposits cash out, so checks check in

A computer glitch combined with a bank holiday kept Seminole County school system employees from receiving direct deposit paychecks this week.

Instead, all employees received printed checks Thursday, a day earlier than usual, said John Reichert, human resources director. District officials said this was the first time employees enrolled in the direct deposit program didn't get their money that way.

"It's an inconvenience for some people to take their hard copy checks and make a deposit in their account," Reichert said.

Employees receive direct deposit checks -- or actual checks if they prefer -- every other Friday. About half of all school system employees have direct deposit, payroll supervisor Elayne Nichols said. The district has 6,524 full-time contracted employees.

Because banks and credit unions were closed Thursday for Veterans Day, the deadline for direct deposit electronic transactions was earlier, Reichert said. The district didn't want to risk employees being without their money Friday, so a decision was made to print 7,190 checks.

The problem could lie with the computer operating system rather than the new payroll program, which has been in place since July, Kosmac said. Employees worked around the clock Tuesday and Wednesday to try to resolve the glitch and print the paychecks.

Here is a great way to build up a Y2K cash reserve that does not actually consitute a cash WITHDRAWAL, therefore is immune from any cash transaction reporting regulations. Note that it only applies if you get a paper paycheck, not direct deposit.

Instead of DEPOSITING your paycheck at your bank, CASH IT at whatever bank it is actually written on. (Obviously, it helps if the bank is local.) This is a clean, no muss, no fuss, way to get cash that is NOT in any way a withdrawal.
