scanner vs cd's

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Very simple, Is it possible to buy a scanner that betters the common Kodak or seattle Filmworks CD? (Like the one you can opt for when you get your pic's developed), or are the factory burnt CD's of a better resolution/quality?

I don't want to invest in a scanner and be disapointed.

Yes, money is an object, let's use comparisons under the $1K figure!

I think most scanners today can do better than Seatle Film works. I have had mixed results with their quality and no satisfaction on complaints.

I have had problems getting scanners to work. The first one worked, ok, until I install something else and it stopped working. I bought another from QVC because of their return policy and it works very nicely. It is a 36bit Scanport and i bought it over a year ago. I'm sure there are better and cheaper models out now.

The most difficult idea for most people is: With digital, a picture is not a picture! You have to make the picture with the intended results in mind or you won't like it! If you say, I'll just scan everything at 1200 and I'll adjust the image quality later. The file sizes will be so large and processing time so long, you will be discusted. But take a moment and learn a little about what is needed for each situation and you prints will be great and the download times short.

However don't expect to email grandma a picture of suzie so she can print an 8x10 unless you both upgrade to lan speeds!
