EMS...DGI's and 911 System Failure

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

As a medic in SW lower MI, I've tried unsuccesfully to subtely inform our other EMS personnel about the potential disaster that looms ahead. I've printed out a few pertinent reports, including the Naval Assesment, and unthreateningly tried to inform people about y2k in general. Some folks have spouses that work at DC Cook Nuke plant, and I've even talked to the spouses. Everyone says everything will be fine.
Our 911 system is based on a ES 9000 IBM Mainframe which may be compliant, but the county is pushing real hard for all services to convert to 800mHz radio system. Their reason...the current 911 software is 12 yrs. old. Some of the police dispatch portions (Lien for example) go down on a regular basis. So I've tried to no avail, to convince people of the potential for disaster, and since our juice comes from who knows where (Cook plant is shut down) I think we are in for a very rough time of it here. We are in a small community (2000 pop.) but when y2k hits, it will be overwhelming.

Don't feel bad. I'm a cop who is also an EMT. I don't know about our 911 system (I was MIS in '90-91)for same. Current MIS guy is a "GI" who justs shakes his head & laughs...

Last I heard 51% of 911 systems will be toast. Several large med centers around me, and a number of higher up medic types are "GI's" and are worried....
