need help w/ woodstove installation

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

Can anyone help me with a woodstove installation in a tent? My long range heat backup is a 18' dia. geodesic dome, 9' high. I have a small wood sstove to put in it but i don't know how to safely hook it up. I can replace a door with plywood or concrete board to run the pipe out, the stove has 30" clearance from the sides of the tent inside, if it's too much to help me with on the forum please email me. This has been a great forum to read, i Got It too late to be of much help to y'all but youve helped me and i thank you. Good luck to all.

Can't tell you all the details here, but as far as clearances to combustibles, such as canvas or wood, recommended clearance from a stove pipe to combustibles is 18 inches. This, and your 30" clearance to combustibles for the woodstove, will give you a starting point in figuring out where and how to install the stove and pipe. Run the pipe through something that is non-cumbustible, such as heavy sheet metal or cement board. Makesure that the minimum clearances are maintained, which with a 6" stove pipe would mean a 42"diameter metal or cement board piece in the wall with a 6" hole for the pipe to go through. (I"m assuming the worst in a cheap installation and guessing that you are thinking of using plain black stove pipe and not insulated stainless steel pipe such as "metalbestos" brand for the chimney) Hope this helps and gives some starting point ideas. Ask if there are more questions.

Bob: here's something to think about; try getting some " DUROCK "which is used for floors ,shower walls,is fire proof, cut a 6"1/4 hole in it and attach a flue pipe ring with adhesive caulk, place another ring (flue pipe) to the outside of the durock. Those sheets are 3'x5' so you should be safe with that. Make sure you have a concrete floor below the stove, in fact get two sheets of "DUROCK" that way you have a firproof floor too, but I would put sand around the floor also just to be safe... Hope these ideas help. Furie...

Bob - check on 'reduced clearance' stove pipe. It's more money but it's insulated and you can get it to within (I think) 6 or 7 inches of combustables. Check with a wood stove store or on line. Regular home suppy and hardware stores don't know much about this stuff. Stove shops are usually very good about advising you on what else you will need. You are usually talking to the owner. Good luck!
