Slide #11 of the GAO's September report on 25 large school districts listed the following school systems as reporting that they will not be "Y2K ready" until after November 30th. I could see rural school systems being at even greater risk, but some urban school systems are lagging on Y2K as well...
Philadelphia City School District
Houston Independent School District
Clark County School District [Las Vegas]
Prince George's County Public Schools
Memphis City School District
Milwaukee Public Schools
Orleans Parish School Board
Cleveland City School District
Granite School District [Salt Lake City]

Reassign the kids to boy & girl scout troops and have them do volunteer internships helping the vulnerable populations... homebound, elderly, etc. Good lessons to be learned.
(Assuming they don't join that group as well.)
