How much should a MC eat?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Maine Coon Cats : One Thread

My male MC will be one in Dec. He has a voracious appetite and always seems hungry. I give him 1/2 can in morning and 1/2 can at night. There is always some Iams dry food in bowl during day. He is quite a beggar, and always wants to steal food that is on the counter. Is this typical MC antics or do I have a glutton on my hands? Thanks.

I have a silver Maine Coon male that is 6 1/2 mos old. He weighs about 13 lbs. He is not at all fat; long and tall with a long bushy tail.

For breakfast he gets a can of Fancy Feast (about 3 oz.) along with a large scoup of cottage cheese and about a teaspoon of Nutri-Cal (a high calorie supplement) along with a small bowl of goats milk. For dinner I give him a whole can of food (5 1/2 oz). He also has dry food out during the day. He seems hungrier in the a.m. so I fill him up.

I'm not an expert but, I don't think you're feeding your boy enough. (You didn't say how big the cans of food were). How much does he weigh? We don't want fat cats but we want them to have enough food to give them the nourishment they need to grow into the big beautiful cats they were meant to be.

I hope this helps.

He probably needs more. I used to have persians. I now have a Maine Coon. He easily eats twice as much as a persian, and he is not fat at all. He consumes at least two cans + dry each day, sometimes a third.

These are big cats.

Hi, My male MC only eats dried food, (Science Diet or Iams) left in a bowl, available to him all day long. I have, in the past, fed him for a treat, Iams canned food, which it takes him several days to eat one whole can. I also occasionally give him some of the crunchy cat treats. He just turned a year and weighs 22lbs. I think if you feed him anymore than what you are feeding him, and you get him altered, you'll have an overweight Coon on your hands as he grows older. I also have "tricked" my cats by keeping dried food in the drawer where I keep the treats; he thinks he's getting treats but is only getting his regular food. Hope this helps!
